Job summary

Crowley in San Juan seeks a Director of Port/Terminal Operations to provide strategic leadership for marine stevedoring, yard operations, security and vessel scheduling. You will drive safety, efficiency and regulatory compliance across the terminal landscape.

Lead a unionized workforce, manage safety and performance initiatives, and supervise a leadership team to optimize capacity and service while aligning with financial and operational goals.

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in marine/transport fields.
• Experience: 5–10 years in operations; 3–5 years in supervisory/management roles.
• Technical: Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word).

What You'll Do:

Responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight for all San Juan port/terminal activities, including marine stevedoring, yard operations, security, engineering support, and vessel scheduling. Ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of cargo while driving operational excellence, regulatory compliance, workforce performance, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Director serves as a key member of the terminal leadership team, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to optimize terminal capacity, enhance customer service, maintain labor relations, and achieve financial and operational objectives.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee daily terminal operations, including stevedoring, yard operations, security, vessel scheduling, and engineering support.
• Coordinate with vessel operations, terminal teams, and other departments to ensure efficient cargo movement and operational performance.
• Manage maintenance and repair activities to support equipment reliability and operational readiness.
• Develop and implement operating standards, procedures, and performance goals for terminal and vessel operations.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable safety, environmental, regulatory, and company requirements, including OSHA, PROSHA, EPA, EQB, USCG, DOT, and ISO standards.
• Support and promote safety, quality, and damage prevention initiatives throughout terminal operations.
• Maintain positive working relationships with union representatives and employees while administering company policies and collective bargaining agreements.
• Oversee the hiring, training, performance management, and development of managers, supervisors, and union employees.
• Directly supervise three managers, eleven supervisors, and more than 200 union employees.
• Manage an annual operating budget exceeding $30 million, including expense monitoring, forecasting, and variance reporting.
• Review and approve operational expenditures in accordance with Crowley policies and financial controls.
• Work closely with Terminal leadership to improve operational efficiency, service levels, and overall terminal performance.

Qualifications

Education & Credentials:

Bachelor's degree in marine engineering, business, transportation or related field; or a combination of post-high school and equal experience may be substituted for education.

Experience:

5 - 10 years related operations experience. 3 - 5 years’ experience in a supervisory or management position.

Technical Skills:

Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Outlook and Word.

Other:

• Bilingual skills may be required.
• Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) credential is required.
• Subject to a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check to obtain your driving history.

Competencies:

Ability to demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to apply skill sets and demonstrate proven experience developing, improving and streamlining processes to meet established goals and objectives. Ability to effectively manage projects that may vary in nature and scope. Strategic operations leader with extensive experience managing port and terminal operations, including marine, yard, security, and engineering functions. Proven ability to lead large, unionized workforces, manage multimillion-dollar budgets, and drive safety, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance. Strong track record of building stakeholder relationships, improving performance, and delivering business results through effective leadership and continuous improvement.

Working Conditions:

Works both inside an office environment and also outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom and be able to climb ladders. May require extended use of computer keyboard and viewing of computer monitor and ability to sit for long periods of time.
