Job summary

Crowley is seeking a Marine Superintendent to ensure safe vessel operations in line with our Safety Management System and applicable standards. You will coordinate with Operations, Technical Superintendents, and other departments to maintain vessel readiness.

The role requires supervision of crew, inspection duties, and coordination with maintenance teams. Travel is frequent, and on-call responsibilities apply to support regulatory inspections and audits.

Qualifications

• Academy degree in deck or engineering is required or equivalent work experience.
• Bachelor’s degree from a Maritime Academy may substitute for the degree.
• 5–7 years in petroleum, cargo handling, or vessel operation desired; 5–10 years at chief engineer or master level preferred.

Responsibilities

• Ensure vessels are crewed, operated, and maintained to regulatory and company standards.
• Travel frequently to multiple locations with extended stays away from homeport.

What You'll Do

The Marine Superintendent role is to ensure assigned vessels are operated safely and in accordance with the company Safety Management System as well as State, Federal and International Standards as applicable. General supervision of day-to-day operations working with Operations Management, Technical Superintendents, Operations Integrity, Marine Personnel, Procurement, and other supporting departments.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Work with supporting teams and management to ensure vessels are crewed, operated, and maintained in accordance with regulatory requirements, company standards, and customer expectations.
• Frequent travel to multiple locations with extended stays away from homeport. Implements standard procedures and guidelines for the operation of a safe and environmentally sound fleet.
• Supervises and provides guidance to the vessel Master with a focus on crew management and development.
• Inspects vessels to ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements, as well as general condition.
• Works with technical superintendent to arrange for maintenance and repair activities to correct any deficiencies.
• Assist with Investigations and ensure Corrective Actions are developed and implemented to address audit and compliance findings, vessel damage, product spills, and personal injuries.
• Ensures timely and effective response to vetting and inspections such as SIRE and Safety Management System audits
• Arrange for or assist with coordination of assist tugs, berth application, pilots, and crew care as necessary.
• Provide technical expertise for specialized jobs in the field. Direct supervision of union and non-union personnel assigned.
• Assist in the development of and adherence to the operational budgets.
• Serve as primary liaison between vessel and shore side management.
• Accountable to provide management with reporting and recommendations to ensure work is done safely in accordance with Management Systems or business unit procedures.

Qualifications

Education & Credentials

• Academy degree in deck or engineering or equivalent work-related experience.
• Bachelor’s degree from a Maritime Academy or 10 years in the maritime industry may substitute for a degree.

Experience

• 5 to 7 years relevant experience in petroleum, cargo handling or vessel operation.
• 5 - 10 years marine transportation at chief engineer or master's level preferred.

Technical Skills

• Proficient in Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Outlook and Word.
• Knowledge of NS5/HELM/ preferred.

Other

• Irregular hours, ability to travel, weekend duties and 24-hour "on-call" status are essential job requirements.
• Must comply with all work rules, including those that pertain to safety and health.
• Active Merchant Mariner Credential or the ability to obtain.

Competencies

Demonstrated competence in vessel/project management. Demonstrated competence in budget development and management. Demonstrated competence in personnel management and evaluation. Well versed on regulatory requirements and vessel inspections. Self-starter and ability to perform a variety of complicated tasks with moderate supervision. Excellent written communication skills with the ability to present complex topics in a clear and concise manner. Possess a management skill set and demonstrate proven experience developing and implementing operational procedures. Requires the ability to effectively manage projects that may vary in nature and scope.

Working Conditions

Works both inside an office environment and also outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom and be able to climb ladders. May require extended use of computer keyboard and viewing of computer monitor and ability to sit for long periods of time.
