Job summary

Washington State Ferries (WSF), a division of WSDOT, seeks a Port Captain to lead safe, reliable fleet operations across Puget Sound. You will oversee deck operations, regulatory compliance, and crew readiness in collaboration with fleet personnel and HR.

Qualified applicants will have extensive maritime leadership, deep knowledge of federal maritime regulations, budget experience, and the ability to guide cross‑functional teams in a fast-paced public service environment.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in a marine supervisory role or equivalent.
  • Professional knowledge of federal maritime regulations (33/46 CFR) and SMS.
  • Experience with vessel scheduling, navigation principles, and safety practices.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and recommend action.
  • Proven leadership in cross-functional teams and conflict resolution.
  • Willingness to work nights or weekends on-call.

Responsibilities

  • Provide operational oversight to deck personnel for safe, reliable fleet operations.
  • Act as liaison between vessel operations and shoreside management to resolve issues.
  • Conduct vessel inspections for seaworthiness and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee regulatory training, certifications, and Staff Captain evaluations.
  • Coordinate vessel maintenance, USCG/CFR compliance, and bridge equipment.
  • Lead safety and operational committees and manage budgets and purchasing.
