A leading healthcare organization is seeking a dedicated diagnostic technician for its sleep disorders department. The selected candidate will perform essential functions including calibrating equipment, managing patient preparation, and ensuring accurate diagnostic testing. The role requires strong interpersonal skills and relevant certifications, alongside participation in ongoing professional development opportunities.
Summary
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to performing diagnostic testing, analysis, and other related duties within the sleep disorders department. May be asked to rotate to other sleep labs to cover staff shortages or fluctuations in patient volume.
(20%)* Calibrates equipment before and after use.
(20%)* Performs patient prep for procedure.
(20%)* Sets-up equipment and performs testing and analysis as ordered by the physician.
(20%)* Checks equipment in use on patient makes appropriate adjustments as needed.
(20%)* Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (Physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history), and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Provides set-up for NPSG, MSLT, all PAP and Oxygen titration, and HST.
Performs positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting. Charts procedure and completes appropriate paperwork. In the event of cardiac, respiratory arrest, or other emergency--calls the code response team or 911.
Documents verbal and written communication with patients and physicians.
Attends department meetings. Informs supervisor of needed supplies in a timely manner.
Cleans equipment per policy and procedure after each use.
Maintains neat and orderly work and patient areas.
Scores PSG and CPAP titrations. Completes Inter-Score Reliability testing monthly with score >= 85%.
If score is below 85%, a plan to show that steps have been taken to improve performance and subsequent tests must be completed.
Assists with training of new employees by following orientation checklist and overseeing collecting, staging and scoring.
Demonstrates current knowledge of safety precautions for equipment.
Participates in opportunities for staff education in: New employee orientation.
Department/job specific education Education for new services provided by the department.
Participates in and maintains established departmental and hospital quality improvement efforts and quality assurance standards.
Communicates openly and freely with all hospital employees.
Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.

Equivalent Experience:Must become registered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists within two years of hire or transfer into position.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

An employee may be required to participate in further learning opportunities offered by MyMichigan Health. Sleep Lab experience in collection and scoring minimum of six months preferred.
Graduate of a sleep program preferred.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
