Position Summary:
The purpose of this position is to provide supervision of personnel in the protection of life and property, prevention of the commission of crimes and the preservation of peace within the city. The sergeant is exposed to various incident settings and must rely on previous training and experience in the application of procedures and allocation of personnel. Successful performance results in effective law enforcement practices contributing to the safety/well-being of the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Enforces local, state, and federal laws while ensuring compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable regulations. Supervises and directs assigned officers in daily patrol operations and field activities.
- Conducts roll calls, briefings, and on-the-job training to communicate assignments, reinforce policies, and support officer development. Performs inspections of personnel, uniforms, vehicles, and equipment to ensure readiness and compliance.
- Assigns, prioritizes, and reviews work of subordinate officers; provides coaching, counseling, and performance feedback, and conducts informal performance evaluations.
- Maintains order and public safety within assigned areas by responding to calls for service, supervising field incidents, and ensuring appropriate enforcement actions are taken in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Provides field supervision and support during routine and high-risk incidents, including backup assistance, scene stabilization, and coordination of initial response efforts at emergencies and crime scenes.
- Responds to major incidents as needed, assisting with scene management, officer safety, and coordination with other units or agencies.
- Prepares, reviews, and ensures accuracy of incident reports, arrest reports, and shift activity documentation in accordance with departmental standards.
- Transports prisoners, serves warrants, and assists in locating and apprehending suspects as required.
- Participates in investigations by assisting officers with evidence collection, case documentation, and preparation of materials for prosecution.
- Communicates with dispatch, monitors radio traffic, and ensures timely notification of supervisors regarding significant incidents or emergencies.
- Responds to citizen inquiries and assists with complaint resolution in a professional and service-oriented manner.
- Coordinates and supports training and development of assigned personnel to ensure compliance with departmental standards and improve operational effectiveness.
- Performs other related duties as assigned in support of patrol operations and departmental objectives.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices, including work planning, assignment, training, review, and performance evaluation of personnel.
- Knowledge of criminal law, rules of evidence, court procedures, search and seizure laws, arrest procedures, and the rights of suspects and prisoners, including custody and evidence handling requirements.
- Knowledge of law enforcement operations, including patrol functions, criminal investigations, crime prevention strategies, and corrections/jail procedures.
- Knowledge of crime trends, community conditions, and geographic layout of the City of Mableton and surrounding areas.
- Knowledge of court and trial procedures, including preparation of reports and documentation for prosecution.
- Knowledge of the use, safety, and effects of law enforcement weapons, defensive tactics, and physical restraint techniques.
- Knowledge of report writing, records management, and documentation standards.
- Skill in supervising, directing, and evaluating the work of subordinate personnel.
- Skill in training, coaching, and developing officers in proper procedures and field performance.
- Skill in interpreting, applying, and explaining laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Skill in assessing situations quickly and taking appropriate action under routine and high-stress conditions.
- Skill in exercising sound judgment, tact, and professionalism when dealing with diverse individuals in varying and often sensitive situations.
- Skill in observing, recalling, and documenting detailed information such as events, names, faces, and physical descriptions.
- Skill in preparing clear, accurate, and concise reports, records, and case documentation.
- Skill in maintaining composure and exercising independent judgment during emergency or critical incidents.

- Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts, variable hours, weekends, holidays, and be on call as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or a related fieldand or;
- Minimum of five (5) years of sworn law enforcement experience andMust possess and maintain certification as a Peace Officer in accordance with Georgia POST Council requirements.
- Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory or command-level experience (e.g., Sergeant or equivalent rank) preferred.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree with course work in political science, criminology, criminal justice, or related field
Working Conditions:
- Visual acuity in both eyes, normal color vision, good accommodation and no field deficits; hear in-person, radio and telephone conversations; recognize differences or changes in sound patterns, loudness or pitch; speak audibly and clearly; identify and distinguish smells of different materials; sit or stand for prolonged periods; walk, kneel, stoop, and crouch; make precise and coordinated finger, hand and limb movements; maintain uniform, controlled hand-arm posture or movement; lift and carry boxes of supplies (average 50 pounds).
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment or in a variety of field and office settings and may require exposure to dangerous and life‑threatening situations. Must be willing to carry a firearm on and off the job; mentally and physically capable of using deadly force, if justified; willing to work any hour of the day or night (shift work), overtime, weekends, on call and holidays; work at any location in the City and travel on specific assignments.
- Supervisory and Management Responsibility: The position has direct supervision over patrol officers, master patrol officers, and other assigned staff.
