Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to provide supervision of personnel in the protection of life and property, prevention of the commission of crimes and the preservation of peace within the city. The sergeant is exposed to various incident settings and must rely on previous training and experience in the application of procedures and allocation of personnel. Successful performance results in effective law enforcement practices contributing to the safety/well-being of the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Enforces local, state, and federal laws while ensuring compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable regulations. Supervises, directs, and evaluates sworn and non-sworn personnel, including assignment of duties, performance monitoring, coaching, counseling, and formal performance evaluations.
- Conducts roll calls, briefings, inspections, and ongoing training to communicate assignments, ensure readiness of personnel, equipment, and vehicles, and support professional development.
- Provides operational oversight of patrol activities, responding to calls for service, supervising field incidents via radio and CAD systems, and ensuring appropriate tactical and policy-driven responses to routine and high-risk situations.
- Responds to major incidents, emergencies, and crime scenes, providing on-scene command, coordinating resources, and assisting with interagency communication and scene management as needed.
- Reviews, prepares, and approves reports, shift activity logs, and administrative documentation, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with reporting standards.
- Participates in criminal investigations through oversight of evidence handling, case review, warrant service, suspect apprehension, and coordination with investigators and other agencies.
- Appears in court and provides testimony as required; ensures proper documentation and case preparation for prosecution.
- Addresses employee complaints and recommends or initiates corrective or disciplinary actions in accordance with departmental policy.
- Assists with administrative functions including personnel records management, crime analysis support, and operational reporting.
- Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints, ensuring professional service delivery and resolution of concerns.
- Performs other related duties as assigned in support of departmental operations and public safety objectives.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices, including planning, assigning, directing, evaluating, and developing personnel.
- Knowledge of criminal law, rules of evidence, court procedures, search and seizure, arrest procedures, prisoners' rights, and evidence handling.
- Knowledge of law enforcement operations, including patrol, criminal investigations, crime prevention, jail operations, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of crime trends, community policing principles, and the geographic layout of the City of Mableton.
- Knowledge of report preparation, records management, and the safe use of law enforcement equipment, firearms, defensive tactics, and physical restraint techniques.
- Skill in leading and mentoring personnel, evaluating performance, and providing training and guidance.
- Skill in interpreting and applying laws, regulations, policies, and procedures while exercising sound judgment and decision-making.
- Skill in communicating effectively, resolving conflicts, and interacting professionally with diverse individuals under routine and high-stress situations.
- Skill in preparing clear, accurate, and comprehensive reports, maintaining records, and observing and recalling critical details.
- Ability to operate computers, law enforcement software, and other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, partner agencies, and the public.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, variable hours, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's in Criminal Justice, Public Administration or a related fieldand or;
- Minimum of five (5) years of sworn law enforcement experience and must possess and maintain certification as a Peace Officer in accordance with Georgia POST Council requirements.
- Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory or command-level experience (e.g., Sergeant or equivalent rank) preferred.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Public Administration, Political Science, or a closely related field preferred.
