Position Summary
The Detective is exposed to various incident settings and must rely on previous training and experience in the application of procedures and supervision of personnel. Successful performance results in effective law enforcement practices contributing to the safety/well-being of the community and the investigation of criminal activity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides sworn testimony in municipal, state, and federal courts regarding criminal investigations, evidence collection, interviews, and case findings; prepares thoroughly for court proceedings and coordinates with prosecutors to support successful case prosecution.
- Reviews and analyzes police reports, evidence, and investigative findings to identify additional leads, determine investigative priorities, and ensure all necessary information is obtained to support criminal charges and court proceedings.
- Conducts comprehensive criminal investigations by interviewing complainants, victims, witnesses, suspects, and other involved parties; obtains written and recorded statements; documents interviews accurately in accordance with departmental policies and legal standards.
- Responds to crime scenes to obtain incident briefings from the primary responding officer, assess investigative needs, identify and preserve evidence, and ensure crime scene integrity is maintained throughout the investigative process.
- Prepares affidavits and obtains, executes, and serves search warrants, arrest warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents in compliance with applicable laws, policies, and constitutional requirements.
- Collects, documents, evaluates, and preserves physical, digital, photographic, and testimonial evidence while maintaining proper chain-of-custody procedures to ensure evidence is admissible in court.
- Maintains detailed investigative case files, documents investigative activities, tracks case progress, and prepares comprehensive reports for supervisors, prosecutors, magistrates, and other criminal justice partners.
- Collaborates with patrol officers, specialized units, prosecutors, forensic personnel, and outside law enforcement agencies to coordinate investigations, exchange intelligence, and assist in the resolution of criminal cases.
- Reviews investigative information to determine probable cause, prepares criminal charges, and presents facts and evidence to magistrates or judicial officials to obtain warrants or other legal authorizations.
- Utilizes departmental records management systems, criminal justice databases, and other investigative resources to research criminal histories, identify suspects, develop investigative leads, and maintain accurate case documentation.
- Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the mission, goals, and operational needs of the Police Department.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of criminal investigation techniques, law enforcement practices, crime prevention, evidence collection, report writing, and records management.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, court procedures, constitutional rights, search and seizure, arrest procedures, and evidence handling.
- Knowledge of departmental policies, investigative methods, interview and interrogation techniques, crime scene procedures, and the safe use of law enforcement equipment and firearms.
- Skill in interpreting and applying laws, regulations, policies, and procedures while exercising sound judgment and discretion.
- Skill in gathering, analyzing, and evaluating facts and evidence; conducting interviews; and preparing clear, accurate investigative reports and legal documents.
- Skill in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, and establishing positive working relationships with the public, coworkers, and partner agencies.
- Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in stressful or emergency situations.
- Ability to operate computers, records management systems, and other law enforcement technology.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality, and manage multiple investigations effectively.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- A demonstrated experience in working an investigation from scene response, evidence processing, suspect identification, arrest, and testimony
- Highschool Diploma or GED
- Equivalent combination of education, experience, and training is acceptable
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Certified Police Officer.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace applications.

- Bachelor’s degree with course work in political science, criminology, criminal justice, or related field
