Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to protect life and property and promote a safe environment within the City of Mableton. This position performs a wide range of law enforcement duties focused on preventing and reducing crime, responding to incidents, and supporting public safety. Effective performance contributes to a safer community, reduced victimization, and enhanced public trust and security.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains law and order and protects life and property by patrolling assigned areas, responding to dispatched calls for service, conducting preliminary investigations, and taking appropriate enforcement action in accordance with laws and departmental policies. Conducts proactive security checks of businesses, parks, public buildings, residential areas, and industrial sites to deter and detect criminal activity.
- Enforces local, state, and federal laws by issuing citations, warnings, and making arrests for traffic violations, criminal offenses, and municipal ordinance violations. Processes arrested persons in accordance with established procedures and ensures proper custody, documentation, and rights compliance.
- Prepares clear, accurate, and timely incident, accident, and supplemental reports; identifies and reports hazardous roadway, environmental, or public safety conditions; and requests appropriate corrective action or assistance from other agencies as needed.
- Responds to emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters, providing initial assessment, scene stabilization, and support. Assists victims by providing information on rights, rendering aid to the injured, and coordinating with EMS and other emergency services.
- Locates suspects, defendants, and witnesses; serves warrants and other legal documents; and assists with apprehension efforts in accordance with established procedures and legal requirements. Assists with crowd control, traffic direction, and security at public events, demonstrations, and active incident scenes.
- Provides mutual aid and backup support to other officers and agencies during routine operations, critical incidents, and high-risk situations, ensuring officer and public safety.
- Appears and testifies in municipal, state, superior, juvenile, and administrative court proceedings as required, providing factual testimony related to assigned cases and reports.
- Participates in daily roll call, inspections, and mandatory training, including firearms, defensive tactics, defensive driving, and other job-related skills development to maintain certification and proficiency.
- Performs specialized assignments as directed, including court security, municipal building security, inmate transport, administrative support, and investigative assistance. May serve as a Field Training Officer and participate in community engagement and public outreach activities with civic groups and organizations.
Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of law enforcement concepts and terminology, including criminal investigation, crime prevention, report writing, records management, first aid, crisis intervention, crowd control, and human behavior principles related to criminology and policing.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, court decisions, and legal procedures, including search and seizure, arrest procedures, suspects’ and prisoners’ rights, evidence handling, criminal investigation practices, and court and trial processes.
- Knowledge of the safe use and effects of law enforcement equipment, including firearms, defensive tactics, and physical restraint techniques.
- Skill in interpreting, applying, and explaining laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Skill in reading and interpreting maps, diagrams, reports, and technical documents.
- Skill in gathering, analyzing, and evaluating facts and evidence; conducting interviews; and drawing sound investigative conclusions.
- Skill in observing, recalling, and documenting detailed information, including events, names, faces, physical descriptions, and numerical data.
- Skill in preparing clear, accurate, and concise reports and maintaining organized case files and records.
- Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing, while exercising tact, professionalism, and cultural awareness when interacting with diverse individuals and groups.
- Skill in exercising sound independent judgment in routine, emergency, and high-stress situations and determining appropriate courses of action.
- Ability to respond quickly, calmly, and effectively in emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications
- Highschool Diploma or GED
- Valid Georgia Driver’s license
- Must be a United States citizen and legally eligible for employment in the United States.
- Must possess a current Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certification and have maintained such certification for a minimum of three (3) years. Candidates must meet all requirements to maintain their POST certification throughout employment.
- Successful completion of the pre employment process which includes, oral interview, background check, criminal records and traffic history check, medical and drug screening, polygraph evaluation, successful completion of Police Academy or proof of previous completion.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associates degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or relevant field.
- City or county personnel or civil service experience.
- Prior experience as a certified law enforcement officer or equivalent public safety experience.
- Demonstrated experience in community policing, patrol operations, or related law enforcement assignments.
- Strong communication, decision-making, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations.
- Additional relevant certifications, specialized training, or military service experience.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Working Conditions
- Visual acuity in both eyes, normal color vision, good accommodation and no field deficits; hear in-person, radio and telephone conversations; recognize differences or changes in sound patterns, loudness or pitch; speak audibly and clearly; identify and distinguish smells of different materials; sit or stand for prolonged periods; walk, kneel, stoop, and crouch; make precise and coordinated finger, hand and limb movements; maintain uniform, controlled hand-arm posture or movement; lift and carry boxes of supplies (average 50 pounds).
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment or in a variety of field and office settings and may require exposure to dangerous and life-threatening situations. Must be willing to carry a firearm on and off the job; mentally and physically capable of using deadly force, if justified; willing to work any hour of the day or night (shift work), overtime, weekends, on call and holidays; work at any location in the City and travel on specific assignments
