Job summary

The Alexandria Police Department is seeking a Human Resources Manager I to lead key HR functions for a 400+ member police agency in Alexandria, VA. You will advise command staff, manage employee relations, leave compliance, workers’ comp, payroll, recruitment, and promotions, ensuring effective operations and compliance.

Qualifications

• Experience administering FMLA and Workers’ Compensation with case management and guidance for staff.
• Strong background in employee relations, performance concerns, policy application and accommodations.
• Experience with payroll and timekeeping for a 24-hour workforce including overtime and leave.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and manage multiple priorities.
• Supervisory, communication, and interpersonal skills supporting staff and leadership.
• Direct HR experience supporting a police or law-enforcement organization is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily HR operations and supervise HR staff.
• Administer FMLA, Workers’ Compensation, accommodations, and return-to-work processes.
• Advise leadership on employee relations, performance management, and policy interpretation.
• Direct payroll, leave, timekeeping and attendance for a 24-hour workforce.
• Oversee recruitment, hiring, and promotional processes with compliant practices.
• Interpret employment laws and collective bargaining provisions applicable to HR functions.
• Maintain HR policies, reports, and documentation; support audits and inquiries.
• Coordinate with City HR, Risk Management, Finance, and legal for complex matters.
• Provide HR training and guidance; represent the Department in meetings and proceedings.
