Job summary

The City of Grand Rapids is seeking a Plumbing Inspector to conduct inspections and re-inspections of residential, industrial, and commercial plumbing systems to assure compliance with codes and to identify defects.

Responsibilities include maintaining inspection records, reviewing installation plans, and coordinating with engineers and contractors.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the plumbing trade.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.

Job description

The purpose of this job is to conduct inspections and re-inspections of residential, industrial and commercial plumbing systems to assure compliance with municipal, State of Michigan and national plumbing codes and identify defects in plumbing systems and connections.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conducts inspections and re-inspections of residential, industrial and commercial plumbing systems to ensure code compliance
  • Maintains records and schedules for plumbing inspections
  • Inspects sewer and water installations
  • Reviews plans to plumbing installations for new construction and existing structures
  • Provides inspection services to other municipalities and townships
  • Inspects medical gas systems
  • Processes Backflow test forms to ensure compliance with current Plumbing code, MDEQ and Local Ordinance requirements
  • Investigates plumbing system complaints involving pressure and water quality issues
  • Conducts residential irrigation surveys
  • Reviews plans to plumbing installations for new construction and existing structures
  • Consults with engineers, contractors and owners regarding the provisions of the codes, ordinances, laws, design criteria and zoning requirements; searches files to determine water and sewer locations
  • Maintains records of inspection activities
  • Assists with flow tests
  • Performs related work as required
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the plumbing trade
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
Required License
  • Michigan Journeyman Plumbing license
