Job summary

The City of Grand Rapids is seeking a supervisory professional to oversee multiple utility crews responsible for water distribution, customer metering, and sewer systems. You will report to a designated superintendent and ensure safe, compliant operations.

Candidates should have a strong background in public works, at least six years of related experience (including supervisory), and relevant licenses/certifications. This is a full-time on-site position with comprehensive benefits.

Job description

The purpose of this job is to supervise work over several types of utility crews engaged in maintaining and repairing the City's water distribution system, customer metering, sanitary sewer system and the storm sewer system. Performs work under the general supervision of a designated superintendent.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Plans, organizes, schedules, assigns and evaluates the work of subordinates; provides training and counseling as needed; conducts employee evaluations, handles complaints and grievances; takes disciplinary actions as needed
  • Supervises crews engaged in the operation, maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines, manholes and related systems and customer metering; ensures proper response to wide array of service emergencies
  • Assures proper health, safety and environmental standards are followed during the course of the work; complies with all associated local, state and federal regulatory requirements; inspects work performed and oversees its proper completion
  • Maintains effective relationships with contractors in relation to customer service, scheduling and following MDEQ law to ensure water quality
  • Develops and implements safety programs. Assures proper health, safety and environmental standards are taught, applied and practiced. Ensures infrastructure maintenance activities comply with state and federal water quality guidelines and standards
  • Assures that adequate supplies, materials and equipment are available to personnel; requisitions, supplies, and materials as needed
  • Co‑ordinates internal and external departments
  • Provides meter maintenance operations response dealing with a variety of customer issues
  • Performs related work as required
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
  • At least six (6) years of related work experience, including three (3) years of supervisory experience in a public works field, water distribution system and/or customer metering, sanitary or storm water collection systems, or construction work in underground utilities with knowledge of equipment operations
  • Or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • State of Michigan EGLE S3 license
  • State of Michigan EGLE Stormwater Operators certification
  • FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification
