Job summary

City of Grand Rapids is seeking a Plumbing Inspector to conduct inspections and re-inspections of residential, industrial and commercial plumbing systems to ensure compliance with municipal, State of Michigan and national codes. The role includes plan reviews, record maintenance, and collaboration with engineers and contractors.

The position requires a High School diploma (or GED), at least 3 years in the plumbing trade, and a Michigan Journeyman Plumbing license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in the plumbing trade.
  • Active Michigan Journeyman Plumbing license.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects residential, industrial and commercial plumbing systems for code compliance.
  • Maintains records and schedules for inspections.
  • Reviews plans for plumbing installations in new construction and existing structures.
  • Consults with engineers, contractors and owners on codes and zoning requirements.
  • Involves inspection of medical gas systems and backflow forms.

Job description

The purpose of this job is to conduct inspections and re-inspections of residential, industrial and commercial plumbing systems to assure compliance with municipal, State of Michigan and national plumbing codes and identify defects in plumbing systems and connections.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conducts inspections and re-inspections of residential, industrial and commercial plumbing systems to ensure code compliance
  • Maintains records and schedules for plumbing inspections
  • Inspects sewer and water installations
  • Reviews plans to plumbing installations for new construction and existing structures
  • Provides inspection services to other municipalities and townships
  • Inspects medical gas systems
  • Processes Backflow test forms to ensure compliance with current Plumbing code, MDEQ and Local Ordinance requirements
  • Investigates plumbing system complaints involving pressure and water quality issues
  • Conducts residential irrigation surveys
  • Reviews plans to plumbing installations for new construction and existing structures
  • Consults with engineers, contractors and owners regarding the provisions of the codes, ordinances, laws, design criteria and zoning requirements; searches files to determine water and sewer locations
  • Maintains records of inspection activities
  • Assists with flow tests
  • Performs related work as required
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent)

--AND--

  • At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the plumbing trade

--OR--

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
Required License
  • Michigan Journeyman Plumbing license
