The GBS Group is seeking a PLC Control Systems Technician to design, implement, and troubleshoot PLC-based control systems for U.S. Navy ships. You will work with designers and engineers on complex naval projects and provide onboard training and support.

Responsibilities include evaluating legacy systems, upgrading circuitry, and documenting technical details. Travel up to 30% CONUS and overseas is expected.

Qualifications

• Minimum Education: High school or trade school. Navy or military experience is a plus but not required.
• 2+ years in designing and working with PLC-based control systems and instrumentation (Rockwell/AB preferred).
• 2+ years reading/modifying electrical schematics/diagrams.
• 2+ years using test/diagnostic tools for PLC hardware/software.
• Knowledge of Linux is a plus.
• Ability to obtain a Secret government clearance.

Overview

The GBS Group has an exciting opportunity for a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Control Systems Technician. As a PLC-based Control Systems Technician with GBS, you will work both independently and with a team of designers and engineers on complex projects related to Naval ship platforms. The position develops and designs state-of-the-art systems for implementation aboard U.S. Navy vessels. This includes prototype execution and demonstration, troubleshooting, installation support and coordination. Direct training of ships personnel and support staff, and life cycle support functions will be accomplished. The role also contributes to future systems for HM&E Machinery Control Systems for U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, Army and Military Sealift Ships supported by the U.S. Navy.

Responsibilities

• Development of new and/or modification of existing PLC control systems and instrumentation systems for U.S. Navy ships.
• Assist in the troubleshooting and repair of existing PLC based control systems to include electrical and mechanical interfaces.
• Onboard ships assistance to include troubleshooting assistance and training of shipboard personnel in the operation of and maintenance of these systems.
• Review of legacy systems and drawings to recommend and develop system upgrades
• Interpret system requirements and design control and sensor circuitry for PLC based control systems.
• Use of diagnostics tools and instruments.
• Gain knowledge of and assist in improvement of major concepts and practices within PLC based control system envelope.
• Development of electrical and mechanical design and drawing development to document systems.
• Review and development of technical documentation including technical manuals and systems equipment lists.
• Ability to travel both CONUS and overseas approximately 30% to perform system troubleshooting and repair and participate in new system installations, retrofits and upgrades.
• Work in a team environment interfacing with various stakeholders including planning yards, shipyards, installation teams and ships force.

Qualifications

Candidates for this position must possess the following professional experience and qualifications:

• Minimum Education: Graduate of high school or trade school, industrial facility experience in electrical or control system, navy or military experience a plus but not necessary
• Two (2) years of professional experience in designing and working with PLC based control systems and instrumentation systems. (Knowledge of Rockwell/Allen Bradley equipment preferred)
• Two (2) years of professional experience in reading and modifying electrical schematics and diagrams.
• Two (2) years’ experience in the use and application of test equipment and diagnostic tools for troubleshooting of and setup of PLC control system hardware and software.
• Knowledge of Linux systems a plus.
• Independent problem-solving ability a plus.
• Ability to communicate and report findings both written and verbal.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret level government clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).

Physical / Mental Requirements

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Basic and advanced math computational skills
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, lift a minimum of 50lbs and walk up and down stairs numerous times.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and in extreme temperatures.
• Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the Naval/Maritime facility or ship.
• Must be able to squat, lift, stretch, and bend in order to reach all areas of the facility.
• Must be able to work in and on overhead structures, as well as below machinery.
• Requires kneeling, bending, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.
• Must be able to see color to discern color-coded wiring
• Pay Rate: $36.00 - $45.50 per hour based on experience
