Job Overview

R&P is looking for a motivated mid-level Electrical Power Controls Engineer to join our team. We are a small-sized defense contractor providing Engineering, Logistics, Program Management and Technical Services to government clients. The Electrical Power Controls Engineer will support the design, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and sustainment of electrical control systems and power distribution architectures for U.S. Navy ship programs.

This role focuses on PLC/HMI programming, automation, control logic development, system integration, and technical support for mission‑critical electrical power systems. The position supports shipboard electric plant and integrated power system control activities for BBG (X) class ships, including PLC/HMI development, control logic troubleshooting, interface testing, system integration, and technical documentation for Navy laboratories, shipyards, land‑based test sites, and shipboard environments. Engineering services will be provided in and around the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Philadelphia. A hybrid/remote work schedule can be acceptable during some design phases.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, implement, and troubleshoot electrical control systems for Navy and defense applications.
  • Develop, program, modify, and optimize PLC logic and HMI interfaces for legacy and new systems.
  • Support integration of shipboard power generation, distribution, conversion, and auxiliary equipment control systems.
  • Troubleshoot PLC logic, I/O signals, sensors, relays, motor controllers, networked control devices, and electrical interfaces.
  • Support testing and troubleshooting in laboratory, shipyard, land‑based test site, and shipboard environments.
  • Create, update, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control logic documentation, and technical manuals.
  • Develop and execute test plans, procedures, troubleshooting procedures, and technical reports to support control system verification and validation.
  • Review system requirements, interface documentation, drawings, and technical specifications to support system integration.
  • Coordinate with Government customers, engineering leads, vendors, and cross‑functional technical teams.
  • Support root‑cause analysis, corrective actions, configuration reviews, and engineering recommendations.
  • Manage technical documentation and engineering deliverables using Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, and other project tracking tools.
Mandatory Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Secret DoD Security Clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret DoD security clearance.
  • Education: B.S. Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, control systems, automation, power systems, or related technical work.
  • Experience with Ladder Logic‑based PLCs, including Allen‑Bradley, Modicon, Siemens, or similar platforms.
  • Experience developing or modifying HMI interfaces.
  • Knowledge of electrical controls, automation systems, power generation, power distribution, and system integration.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, test procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical, controls, and power equipment issues.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and project coordination skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Exceptional oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Regular physical activity may include walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting up to 30 pounds, standing, and occasionally prolonged sitting.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting Navy, DoD, shipboard, or industrial power systems.
  • Familiarity with requirements tracking, test documentation, configuration management, and engineering change processes.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols, networked controllers, remote I/O, control system interfaces, and tools such as Rockwell/Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, Modicon/Schneider, Wonderware/AVEVA, AutoCAD Electrical, MATLAB/Simulink, or LabVIEW.
  • Experience supporting laboratory, shipyard, industrial, or shipboard testing environments.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity/RMF considerations for control systems.
  • Experience interfacing directly with Government customers or technical authorities.
