Job summary

Pearson is seeking a hands-on principal engineer to lead the modernization of our content platform. You will design target systems, migrate content and users, and build shared services across UI, workflow orchestration, AI, backend, and cloud infrastructure.

This role spans across teams, owning critical designs and code on the path to launch. You will mentor engineers, drive architectural decisions, and push for secure, scalable, and observable solutions while balancing speed and long-term

Qualifications

• 12+ years building and operating production software.
• 4+ years at staff or principal level, or as technical lead across multiple teams.
• Led a re-platforming or legacy migration of a production system with active users.
• Led the design and delivery of technically complex, user-facing systems.
• Upgraded or migrated production systems off end-of-life runtimes or frameworks.
• Full-stack depth in Java/Spring Boot, Node.js/TypeScript, React with MongoDB and event-driven services.
• Experience with AWS, ECS Fargate, Lambda, S3, API Gateway, observability, CI/CD, and IaC.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical plan and delivery for several tracks from design through launch.
• Lead migrations of large content and data volumes with verification for downstream products.
• Build shared capabilities exposed through clean APIs.
• Provide an honest, costed view of technical debt and priority fixes.
• Serve as technical point of contact for escalated incidents and post-mortems.
• Ensure security and stability across runtimes, vulnerability remediation, and disaster recovery.
• Set cross-team standards for design, tooling, reliability, observability, and AI-powered workflows.
• Define long-term roadmaps and become the subject-matter expert for the area.
