Job summary

Day & Zimmermann is seeking a Piping Engineering Department Manager to lead a team of piping engineers and designers in delivering innovative piping system solutions for complex EPCm projects in the chemical process industries.

You will oversee technical quality, regulatory compliance, and resource deployment while driving continuous improvement and staff development in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of EPCm/chemical process industry experience required.
  • 3+ years in secondary industries such as Pharmaceutical, Food & Beverage, or Advanced Manufacturing favored.
  • Experience with 3D modeling and Autodesk Plant 3D is advantageous.

Step into the role of Piping Engineering Department Manager at Day & Zimmermann, a key leadership position within the D&Z MC - Engineering division. In this capacity, you will lead a vibrant team of piping engineers and designers, shaping the strategic direction and operational excellence of the department dedicated to delivering innovative piping system solutions.

This role demands a blend of technical mastery, people management, and strategic foresight to oversee all piping engineering activities from initial concept through project completion within complex EPCm projects, primarily focused on the chemical process industries.

Your responsibilities will include ensuring the highest standards of engineering quality, driving compliance with regulatory and client requirements, while efficiently managing department resources to meet project budgets and timelines. You will champion a culture of innovation, continuous professional development, and collaboration to foster a dynamic and supportive working environment.

As the Piping Engineering Department Manager, here is the work you'll do:
  • Provide strategic leadership and comprehensive management of the piping engineering department, including allocation of manpower, project scheduling, utilization of engineering tools, and delivery of outputs throughout all stages of projects. Expect to dedicate a substantial portion of your capacity to this core area.
  • Ensure all engineering deliverables adhere to stringent technical standards, company policies, and client expectations, aligning with recognized national and international codes, dedicating focused effort toward quality assurance and process compliance.
  • Plan and implement efficient resource management practices ensuring optimal staffing and workload distribution to maximize team productivity and project success.
  • Lead proactive talent development within the team—identify skills gaps, orchestrate training initiatives, and nurture professional growth to build a resilient and capable engineering workforce.
  • Supervise performance management processes including regular appraisals, providing constructive feedback, motivating team members, and overseeing compensation administration to support retention and engagement.
  • Manage department budgets and project timelines with vigilant cost control and schedule adherence practices, promptly addressing any deviations through corrective action plans.
  • By executing these responsibilities, you will ensure the delivery of superior engineering solutions that fulfill project goals while promoting a culture of teamwork, innovation, and continuous improvement within the department.
This role is for you if you have these skills:
  • Proven expertise managing complex projects in the chemical process sectors, including hands-on engagement at project sites to acquire critical operational insights that inform precise and realistic design outputs.
  • Exceptional organizational and multitasking skills to oversee concurrent projects maintaining clarity in priorities and efficient coordination.
  • Advanced proficiency in developing design basis for Capital Cost Estimates, managing project schedules, applying rigorous cost control techniques, and facilitating transparent, effective communication with various stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, enabling clear written and verbal exchanges with clients, multidisciplinary teams, and senior leadership to foster collaboration and project alignment.
  • High level of competence with Microsoft Office products complemented by the ability to swiftly adapt to new engineering software such as AutoCAD and Bluebeam, ensuring accuracy and quality in technical documentation and project deliverables.
And if you have these qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BA/BS) is required to provide the foundational technical knowledge necessary for this leadership role.
  • An advanced degree in a relevant engineering discipline is preferred, supporting enhanced analytical, managerial, and strategic capabilities.
  • A minimum of 15 years of professional experience in the EPCm industry or within an operating company directly related to the chemical process industry sectors such as Chemical, Petrochemical, Chemical Intermediates, or Fibers Industries is mandatory, demonstrating a deep understanding of industry-specific challenges and solutions.
  • Experience exceeding 3 years in secondary industries such as Pharmaceutical, Food & Beverage, or Advanced Manufacturing is favored, enriching your perspective on diverse project environments and requirements.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on project experience with 3D modeling and design programs like Autodesk Plant 3D, complemented by familiarity with laser scanning technology, is advantageous for modern engineering applications.
  • Proficiency in pipe stress analysis using Caesar II is a desirable skill to aid in the assessment and validation of piping system integrity under various operational conditions.

In compliance with this state’s pay transparency laws, the salary range for this role is $136,480.00 - $204,720.00. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. (The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, schedule type, and the applicability of collective bargaining agreements).
