Job description

Physician (Occupational Medicine)

This position is located at Naval Health Clinic Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina. Hours are Monday–Friday from 06:30 to 16:00. The role is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) appointment for qualified U.S. citizens or nationals.

Responsibilities

• Perform occupational physical examinations—including pre-placement, medical surveillance, medical qualification, disability retirement, fitness-for-duty, and special employee examinations.
• Coordinate with facility and community resources to provide comprehensive work‑related care to employees.
• Notify management of exam results and recommend appropriate work restrictions or accommodations.
• Interpret ancillary test results for evidence of occupational disease or confounding personal health conditions.
• Diagnose and consult for follow‑up evaluations for conditions discovered during occupational medical examinations.
• Evaluate and treat on‑the‑job illnesses and injuries; stabilize and transfer those suffering from urgent or potentially life‑threatening conditions.
• Conduct periodic worksite visits.
• Develop and oversee medical surveillance and qualification programs.
• Serve as a member of the professional medical staff and provide advisory services at meetings, committees, conferences, and boards.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Degree: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited U.S. or Canadian institution; foreign degrees equivalent to U.S. accredited programs and verified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates.
• Licensure: Current, active, full, and unrestricted medical license or registration in a U.S. state, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory.
• Graduate Training: Minimum of one year of supervised clinical experience post‑degree (internship or first year of residency).
• Residency Training: Successful completion of a U.S. accredited residency program in Preventive Medicine, Aerospace Medicine, or Occupational Medicine; total clinical training of at least four years in the specialty.
• Eligibility: U.S. citizens, nationals, or individuals who owe allegiance to the United States.
• Additional Requirements: Full malpractice coverage, and eligibility for the Department of Defense benefit package including paid leave, medical benefits, and retirement plans.
