Job summary

Mohawk Valley Health System is seeking a Laboratory Assistant I to greet patients, collect blood and urine specimens, and perform clerical tasks. The role supports the Laboratory Services team under supervision, ensuring accurate specimen collection and proper registration of tests.

Responsibilities include phlebotomy for patients of all ages, specimen labeling, safety protocols, and maintaining organized workflows to optimize patient care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Depending on work location, valid driver’s license may be required.
• Preferred: 1 year phlebotomy or patient care experience.
• Preferred: Phlebotomy certification from an accredited program.

Responsibilities

• Obtain blood specimens by skin puncture (capillary) or venipuncture using appropriate technique and maintaining specimen integrity.
• Register and order tests on patients and ensure scripts are scanned into the system daily.
• Instruct patients on collection of urine, sputum, and stool specimens and accept these specimens.
• Follow Chain of Custody protocols and correct patient identification procedures.
• Provide patient care in a safe, efficient manner and keep phlebotomy areas stocked and clean.
