Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED or higher
• Completion of Phlebotomy Training Program or Medical Assistant Training Program or six months phlebotomy experience
• Knowledge of coding, basic math, and payer/insurance benefits preferred
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office and office equipment (fax/copier) preferred
• Medical terminology and laboratory information system experience preferred

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates LIS competency by placing orders, monitoring reports, handling system errors, and looking up test codes and physician demographics.
• Follow standard precautions in phlebotomy.
• Confirm patient and specimen identity using two identifiers.
• Follow department protocols for blood collection and post-venipuncture care.
• Respond to pages promptly and prioritize tasks accordingly.
• Minimize redraws and comply with redraw policy.
• Maintain low blood culture contamination rate (<2%).
• Assist with specimen procurement and urine drug screen collections.
• Collect nasal and throat swabs as required.
• Receive and process laboratory orders and document specimen receipt.
• Process orders during downtime to progress testing.
• Interact professionally with providers, coworkers, and patients to ensure quality lab services.
• Answer phones with professional etiquette and minimize hold times.
• Keep current with protocol changes and communicate accurately.
• Deliver specimens to the laboratory promptly and package for safe transport.
• Fill supply orders and rotate stock to reduce waste.
• Monitor collection and unreceived lists; ensure readiness for service requests.
• Operate hospital vehicles in compliance with regulations during site travel.
• Contribute to phlebotomy competency and training of new staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
