Job summary

Qualifications

• Equivalent of four years of high school education preferred.
• One year of full time experience preferred.
• Certification eligible with a National Phlebotomy Association preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure.
• Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
• Determines priority of STAT draws and ensures timely transport of specimens to lab for testing.
• Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions; records workload statistics.
• Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments to ensure orderly workflow.
• Under supervision, assists in training of new employees and student interns in phlebotomy duties.
• Follows safety training, exposure control plans, and general hazards awareness.
• May act as receptionist in the outpatient lab; greets patients and answers phones when required.
• Duties include daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness in the department; records refrigerator temperatures.
• Performs electrocardiograms.
