Job summary

Keck Hospital of USC is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to support the department by obtaining blood samples, ensuring specimen integrity, and handling processing and transport of all samples. The role also includes answering inquiries, disseminating lab reports, and coordinating with referral laboratories.

The position requires phlebotomy training or certification, 1 year of phlebotomy experience, and proficiency in MS Office.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate from accredited Phlebotomy Program.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician - CPT (CA DPH).
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City).
  • Experience in Phlebotomy (1 year, preferably in acute care).
  • Proficiency with MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains blood sample specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to clinician requests, with age considerations.
  • Receives and screens specimens for acceptability per guidelines.
  • Delivers blood products to Surgery and transports surgical specimens.
  • Processes, distributes or packages specimens (excluding Anatomic Pathology).
  • Responds to inquiries about lab results, specimen status and general information.
  • Interacts professionally with patients, staff and guests, considering age.
  • Follows Hospital/Department policies and participates in quality improvement.
  • Performs additional clinical and clerical duties as needed by the department.
