Job summary

MercyOne North Iowa seeks a Lab Assistant to support multiple laboratory departments in the collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of tests essential for patient care. You will help ensure accurate specimen handling, data integrity, and timely turnaround within a 36-hour workweek and day shifts.

The role emphasizes venipuncture proficiency, proper labeling, LIS data entry, and collaboration with staff to maintain quality and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills with the ability to learn new systems and tools quickly.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks appropriate to patient age; collects specimens per policy.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions and manages add-ons and pending lists.
• Identifies patients and specimens using two identifiers and labels containers.
• Registers and logs specimens in LIS and ensures data accuracy.
• Performs specimen processing and documentation per laboratory protocols.
• Resolves problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures to ensure quality and turnaround.
• Operates LIS to support data entry and workflow management.
• Restocks supplies and supports department initiatives as assigned.
