Job summary

MercyOne Health System in Iowa is seeking a Lab Assistant to support multiple laboratory departments by collecting, processing, and reporting tests necessary for patient care. The role requires performing venipunctures and specimen handling, accurate labeling, LIS data entry, and adherence to safety and quality standards while working 40 hours per week on the evening shift.

Qualifications

• Laboratory experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
• Strong computer skills and ability to learn new systems quickly.

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks per patient age guidelines.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions, manages add-ons and pending lists.
• Identifies patients and specimens with two identifiers and labels correctly.
• Registers and logs specimens in the LIS and ensures data integrity and documentation.
• Performs specimen processing and proper handling per protocols.
• Assists in resolving problematic specimens and test orders with staff.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical-handling procedures to support quality and safety.
• Operates LIS to support data entry and workflow management.
• Contributes to general lab operations by restocking supplies and participating in committees.
