Job description

Summary:

Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family-centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital's mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.

Responsibilities:
  1. Performs functions related to the computer system to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
  2. Handles patient registration, including patient identification, verification, entering demographics, insurance info, guarantor, PCP, and ordering provider details, following established policies.
  3. Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), including obtaining diagnostic codes, reviewing documents, securing patient signatures, and managing scans.
  4. Performs clerical activities such as record sorting, filing, follow-up on medical necessity, answering phones, report delivery, and patient intake into clinical areas.
  5. Maintains and monitors standing orders for expiration and renewal, ensuring tasks are completed.
  6. Provides patients with forms, instructions for specimen collection, and may contact patients for additional information or to repeat tests.
  7. Schedules venipunctures or capillary punctures based on test priority, using computer-generated labels, and adhering to collection procedures and hospital policies.
  8. Verifies patient identity and prepares patients for venipuncture, observing fasting or special diet requirements.
  9. Obtains blood samples using venipuncture or capillary techniques, monitors for deviations or adverse reactions, and may collect other specimens.
  10. Handles specialized tests, monitors patient reactions, and may perform bleeding times.
  11. Labels, wraps, transports samples, and maintains procurement records.
  12. Follows hospital policies and universal precautions during all duties.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned, ensuring all actions meet age-specific patient needs and established procedures, including sample collection at patients' homes.
Other information:
Education:

High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certification through a recognized agency or completion of a phlebotomy program with internship (or equivalent experience) is required.

Experience:

Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on all age groups. Strong interpersonal, clerical, and technical skills. Knowledge of blood collection equipment and procedures. Certification in phlebotomy required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Involves inpatient care environment with walking and physical effort, exposure to odors and communicable diseases, manual dexterity for venipuncture, and ability to distinguish colors.

Supervisory Responsibility:

None.
