Summary

Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned unit. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family-centered care and nursing services in accordance with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.

Responsibilities

  • Performs functions related to the computer system for proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
  • Patient registration, including patient identification, verification, and entering demographics, insurance, and test orders.
  • Manage Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), obtaining supporting diagnostic codes, reviewing documents, and obtaining patient signatures.
  • Performs clerical activities such as record sorting, answering phones, and report delivery.
  • Maintains/monitors standing orders for expiration and renewals.
  • Provides instructions to patients regarding tests and specimen collection preparations.
  • Schedules venipunctures or capillary blood punctures, ensuring proper procedures are followed.
  • Verifies patient identity and proper preparation before blood draws.
  • Obtains blood samples using venipuncture or capillary puncture techniques.
  • Labels, wraps, transports samples, and maintains records of procurement.
  • Performs duties according to hospital policies and universal precautions.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Phlebotomy certification through a recognized agency or completion of a phlebotomy program with internship.

Experience

  • Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants.
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients.
  • Knowledge of blood collection equipment, anticoagulants, and related precautions.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work in inpatient care environment with walking and physical effort.
  • Exposure to odors and communicable diseases, with adherence to infection control protocols.
  • Manual dexterity for venipunctures.
