Summary

Under the general supervision of the Pathology Manager or Phlebotomy Supervisor, performs a variety of activities including phlebotomy procedures, registration, test orders, specimen tracking and processing, overseeing scheduling, assigning and training phlebotomists, as well as performing clerical and secretarial functions in support of the department. All functions are carried out considering the aging processes, human development stages, cultural patterns, and patient choice in each step of the care process.

Responsibilities
  1. Performs functions related to computer systems to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens, including registration, patient identification, verification, entering demographics, insurance info, order tests, and document scanning.
  2. Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), obtaining supporting diagnostic codes, document review, patient signatures, and scanning.
  3. Performs clerical activities such as record sorting, answering phones, and delivering reports.
  4. Maintains and monitors standing orders for expiration and renewals.
  5. Provides patient instructions for tests and specimen collection, and follows up to complete patient records.
  6. Monitors staff worklists and reviews reports for accuracy, providing feedback and coaching as needed.
  7. Acts as liaison with physicians and external agencies to resolve inquiries and problems.
  8. Assists with phlebotomy duties, performs coagulation tests, and may perform waived laboratory tests.
  9. Participates in hiring, training, and evaluating phlebotomists, maintaining training manuals and records.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned, including clerical tasks and compliance with hospital policies.
Education

High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certification through a recognized agency or completion of a certified program with internship is required. Alternatively, 6 months of phlebotomy experience or 5+ years of experience may be considered in lieu of certification.

Experience

Minimum 5 years of phlebotomy experience required. Skills include venipuncture on all age groups, excellent interpersonal and clerical skills, and knowledge of blood collection equipment and procedures. Certification required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work involves inpatient care settings, considerable walking, some physical effort, exposure to odors and communicable diseases, manual dexterity, and color discrimination.

None.
