Job description

Summary:

Under supervision of the Manager of Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Collects samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units, including pediatric and adult outpatient populations. Transports specimens, completes basic records, and fosters patient and family-centered care aligned with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.

Responsibilities:
  1. Performs functions related to the computer system for proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
  2. Handles patient registration, including identification, verification, and entering demographics, insurance information, and test orders following established policies.
  3. Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), including obtaining supporting diagnostic codes, reviewing documents, and obtaining patient signatures.
  4. Performs clerical activities such as record sorting, filing, follow-up on medical necessity, answering phones, and delivering reports.
  5. Maintains and monitors standing orders for expiration and renewal, ensuring tasks are completed.
  6. Provides instructions to patients regarding test preparations and may contact patients for additional information or to return for repeat tests.
  7. Schedules venipunctures or capillary blood draws based on test priority, utilizing computer-generated labels and referencing protocols to ensure proper specimen collection.
  8. Verifies patient identity and prepares patients for venipuncture, including fasting or special diet requirements.
  9. Obtains blood samples using venipuncture or capillary techniques, alerts staff to deviations or adverse conditions, and may collect other specimens as needed.
  10. Handles specialized tests, monitors patient reactions, and may perform bleeding times.
  11. Labels, wraps, transports samples according to type and urgency, and maintains procurement records.
  12. Performs all duties following hospital policies and universal precautions.
  13. Performs other assigned duties, including sample collection at patient homes following established procedures.
Minimum Education:

High school diploma or GED required. Phlebotomy certification through the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and/or completion of a formal phlebotomy program with internship (100 venipunctures) required. Alternatively, 6 months of phlebotomy experience or 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered in lieu of certification.

Minimum Experience:

Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants. Skills in patient communication, record keeping, and knowledge of blood collection equipment and procedures. Ability to distinguish chromatic colors. A valid Phlebotomy certificate is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

Work involves inpatient care with considerable walking and physical effort, exposure to odors and communicable diseases, and manual dexterity for venipunctures.

None.
