Summary

Under supervision of the Manager Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units. Collects samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family-centered care in line with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital’s mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.

Responsibilities

  • Performs functions related to computer systems for proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
  • Handles patient registration, including identification, verification, and entering demographics, insurance, and test orders following established policies.
  • Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), including documentation and patient signatures.
  • Performs clerical activities, such as record sorting, answering phones, and report delivery.
  • Maintains/monitors standing orders for expiration and renewal.
  • Provides instructions to patients for tests and specimen collection, including special preparations.
  • Schedules venipunctures or capillary blood draws based on test priority.
  • Collects blood samples using venipuncture or capillary techniques, ensuring proper procedures and patient safety.
  • Labels, wraps, transports samples, and maintains procurement records.
  • Performs duties per hospital policies and universal precautions.
  • Performs other assigned duties, including home sample collection following protocols.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Phlebotomy certification through a recognized agency and/or completion of a formal internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.
  • Alternatively, 6 months of phlebotomy experience or 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience in lieu of certification may be considered.

Experience

  • Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on all age groups.
  • Good interpersonal skills to communicate procedures and reduce patient anxiety.
  • Knowledge to provide care considering age, development, and cultural factors.
  • Clerical skills for record-keeping and data entry.
  • Familiarity with blood collection equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to distinguish colors for specimen processing.
  • Phlebotomy certification required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work involves walking, physical effort, and exposure to odors and communicable diseases, with safety protocols in place.
  • Manual dexterity needed for venipunctures.
