Summary:
Under the supervision of the Manager of Laboratory Outreach Services or guidance of the Lead Phlebotomist, performs responsibilities associated with obtaining blood and various other patient specimens in accordance with department procedures. Obtains samples ordered by physicians for routine and specialized tests on assigned units. Takes samples from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. Transports specimens and completes basic records. Fosters patient and family-centered care and nursing services in accordance with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospital's mission, vision, and values, considering all developmental stages and cultural patterns.
Responsibilities:
- Performs various functions related to the computer system to ensure proper collection and documentation of patient specimens.
- Registers patients, verifies patient identity, enters demographics, insurance info, and orders tests following established policies, including medical necessity documentation and scanning.
- Manages Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN/ASN), including obtaining supporting diagnostic codes, reviewing documents, obtaining patient signatures, and managing/scanning documentation.
- Performs clerical activities such as follow-up on medical necessity, sorting and filing records, answering phones, and delivering reports.
- Maintains/monitors standing orders for expiration and renewals, ensuring tasks are completed.
- Provides patients with necessary forms and instructions for test preparations or appointments; contacts patients for additional information if needed.
- Schedules venipunctures or capillary blood draws based on priority and test type, utilizing computer-generated labels and referencing protocols to ensure proper specimen collection.
- Verifies patient identity and prepares patients for venipuncture, including fasting or special diets.
- Performs blood draws and alerts staff to any deviations or adverse conditions; may collect other specimens and process samples as needed.
- Obtains samples for specialized tests, verifies doses, and monitors patient reactions.
- Labels, wraps, transports samples, and maintains records of procurement.
- Follows hospital policies and universal precautions in all duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned, reflecting the age-specific needs of patients and following protocols for home sample collection.
Other information:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Phlebotomy certification through NAA or completion of a recognized program, including a formal internship with 100 successful venipunctures, or 6 months of experience in lieu of internship, or 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience in lieu of certification.
Experience:
- Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on all ages.
- Good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and ease patient fears.
- Knowledge of care considerations for different ages, development stages, and cultural backgrounds.
- Clerical skills for record keeping and data entry.
- Familiarity with blood collection equipment and procedures.
- Ability to distinguish colors.
- Phlebotomy certification required.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Work in inpatient care with significant walking and physical effort required at times.
- Exposure to odors and communicable diseases, with safety minimized by infection control protocols.
- Manual dexterity for venipuncture.
