Job Summary
Phlebotomist I performs daily phlebotomy activities of the Patient Service Center (PSC) or In-office Phlebotomy (IOP) accurately and on time. The person in this position interacts with clients, patients, and other PathGroup personnel professionally and courteously, performing forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Greet customers appropriately and treat all customers courteously.
- Ensure all field and PSC specimens are collected accurately and timely.
- Collect specimens according to established procedures, explaining the process clearly and courteously to reduce patient anxiety.
- Dispose of biohazard fluids, tissues, and contaminated sharps according to applicable laws and policies.
- Complete requisitions accurately.
- Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into the computer with high accuracy; verify handwritten orders and test details.
- Research test/client information using lab computer systems.
- Match requisition forms to specimens, label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
- Package specimens for transport, maintaining sample integrity according to protocols.
- Maintain required records and documentation, including daily logs and monthly statistics.
- Perform clerical duties like filing, faxing, mailing, and electronic data entry.
- Approve time in attendance software and submit expense and travel logs as directed.
- Adhere to grooming, dress code, and lab coat policies; maintain a neat appearance.
- Handle fluctuating patient flow efficiently.
- Communicate professionally with clients, patients, and co-workers.
- Answer phones courteously, identifying yourself and providing helpful information.
- Work independently, reporting issues to supervisors promptly.
- Contribute to a positive work environment and team effort.
- Ensure facilities are clean and well-maintained, reporting repairs as needed.
- Assist with inventory counts and report shortages.
- Use proper PPE and follow safety protocols to ensure safety and confidentiality.
- Comply with security, privacy, and corporate policies to protect sensitive information.
