Job Description

This phlebotomist position in Brooklyn focuses on high-volume specimen collection and processing in a patient service center environment. The role involves performing blood draws, handling and preparing specimens according to established protocols, and maintaining accurate documentation while delivering courteous, clear communication to patients and colleagues.

Responsibilities
  • Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures, such as urine or fecal collection, to patients.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocol requirements.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
  • Package specimens for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
  • Follow detailed procedures specific to each protocol to ensure proper handling and transport of specimens.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a clean and safe work area.
  • Update patient information and maintain accurate records within the designated systems.
  • Provide attentive patient care throughout the specimen collection process, demonstrating strong communication skills.
  • Work efficiently in a fast-paced setting, managing a high volume of daily blood draws while maintaining quality and accuracy.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 2 years of recent professional phlebotomy experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles for venipuncture.
  • Strong phlebotomy skills, including blood draw and specimen collection.
  • Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Reliable and punctual work habits.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to explain procedures and interact with patients and colleagues.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and data entry.
  • Attention to detail to ensure accurate matching of requisition forms, labels, and scripts.
  • Ability to provide compassionate, professional patient care during specimen collection.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Bilingual language skills are preferred but not required.

Work Environment

This role is based in a patient service center in Brooklyn, operating as a two‑person site where collaboration and clear communication are essential. The phlebotomist typically performs approximately 30–50 blood draws per day in a fast‑paced setting that requires consistent attention to accuracy, safety, and patient care. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The environment involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment, specimen collection supplies, centrifuges, and computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite for documentation and data entry.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
