Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods to patients
  • Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
  • Fully understand and follow all physicians' orders
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
  • Package specimens for transport
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend annual department trainings
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to respond to inquiries
  • Assist with various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations
