Overview
A healthcare services provider is seeking a Phlebotomist for a 3 months contract engagement with potential for permanent placement. This role plays an important part in ensuring accurate specimen collection and handling to support patient care and lab operations.
What you'll do
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge samples according to established procedures
- Collect and store specimens following proper protocols
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
- Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
- Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy
- Package specimens for transport and store them at required temperatures
- Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and label accurately
- Follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
- Attend annual department trainings
- Answer telephone calls and communicate laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
- Assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks
- Update patient information as needed
Required qualifications
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
- Minimum of 1 year of experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- High School Diploma or GED
