Job summary

Lackawanna College is seeking an Adjunct Instructor in Philosophy to teach Fall 2026 courses. The candidate will prepare and deliver lessons in a classroom or TEAMS setting, adapt to diverse learners, and guide students toward successful learning outcomes.

Prior teaching in higher education is encouraged, with LMS proficiency required. Required: Bachelor's degree with 18 philosophy credits; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Master's degree preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares lesson plans and teaches in classroom or virtual (TEAMS) setting.
  • Thoroughly prepares all course lessons for diverse learners and current trends.
  • Provides guidance to students to optimize learning outcomes.
  • Completes required documentation: syllabi, grades, attendance, and SLO reflections.
  • Maintains a professional classroom environment and fosters critical thinking.
  • Applies material to practical contexts to reinforce learning.
  • Supports Dean with other duties as needed.

Job description

Adjunct Instructor - Philosophy

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES: Adjunct instructors are part-time faculty hired to teach a specified course/s on a per-semester basis. The opportunity to continue teaching at the college is assessed every semester, and criteria for re-employment include: Attention to administrative deadlines (i.e., setting up course prior to semester start, grading student work, tracking attendance), timely and professional communication with students and colleagues, and students' course/instructor evaluations. Current openings are for classes running for Fall 2026.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares lesson plans and instructs students in a classroom and/or virtual (TEAMS) setting.
  • Thoroughly prepares and teaches all course lessons, considering diverse learners and accounting for current trends and industry regulations.
  • Provides support and guidance to students to optimize learning outcomes.
  • Completes and maintains all required documentation and records, meeting established deadlines, including, but not limited to, syllabi, grades, midterm and final grades, attendance, and end-of-semester reflection on Student Learning Objectives (SLOs).
  • Fosters a professional and supportive classroom environment conducive to students learning, asking questions, thinking critically, and growing as individuals.
  • Provides meaningful hands-on application of material to reinforce transfer of learning.
  • All other duties as required by the Dean.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required, including a minimum of 18 credits in any combination of philosophy courses (e.g., ethics, morality, metaphysics, etc.).
  • Master's degree preferred.

Experience

  • Demonstrated prior teaching experience in a corporate or higher education setting preferred.
  • Proficiency using Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas).
