Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory seeks a PhD graduate to join the Missile GN&C engineering team in Laurel, MD. You will help design and evaluate GN&C subsystems for strategic missile systems, using state estimation and Kalman filtering in 6-DOF simulations.

You will work with MATLAB/Simulink, present results to sponsors, and contribute to independent evaluations that inform system performance and design.

Qualifications

Have, or soon to have, a PhD in Engineering, Physics, Math, or a related field.
Coursework and/or research in flight dynamics, guidance, navigation, or control, linear state-space systems, physical system modeling, or estimation theory.
Willing to learn new skills and expand capabilities.
Able to obtain Interim Secret clearance by start date and ultimately Top Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

Develop innovative GN&C methodologies for next-generation strategic missile flight systems.
Apply state estimation techniques to problems with large state representations for on-board implementations and post-flight analysis.
Develop and understand weapon system navigation error models from a math/physics perspective.
Work with MATLAB and Simulink to generate navigation sensor models and conduct performance trade studies.
Develop navigation algorithms for 6-DOF simulations.
Present analysis and results to sponsors to inform weapon system performance and designs.
