Job Overview

The Pharmacy Technician for Medication Access is primarily responsible for coordination of medication access for patients and families. This position also spends a portion of time performing the job duties of a Pharmacy Technician; under the direction of a licensed pharmacist and following established policies and procedures, performs a variety of technical procedures to support hospital inpatient or outpatient pharmacy operations.

The Pharmacy Technician Medication Access in this role will support our ambulatory clinics. The programs and clinics we offer provide a comprehensive way to address several conditions in a convenient and thorough manner. By bringing together experts from different departments in these specialized programs and clinics, we can provide our patients and families with a holistic way to treat skin conditions and address every aspect related to each condition.

Additional Information

Department: Pharmacy Shared Services

Hours per week: 40, eligible for benefits

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8am-4:30pm. This position may allow for the occasional opportunity to work from home. This is dependent upon the successful completion of department on-boarding/training, offsite workload and job performance/competence.

Qualifications

  • EDUCATION – High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • EXPERIENCE – Two (2) years of pharmacy technician experience
  • EQUIVALENCY –
    • Completion of pharmacy technician program may substitute for one (1) year of the experience requirement. OR
    • Completion of pharmacy technician program plus one (1) year of experience performing medication prior authorizations may substitute for two (2) years of pharmacy technician experience.
  • CERTIFICATION(S) –
    • State of Colorado Pharmacy Technician (PHAT) Certification
    • Certificate through a nationally recognized certification board or body approved by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcare Association (NHA)
  • Previous prior authorization experience preferred.

  • Essential Functions

    An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.
    • Communicates with third-party insurance, clinical staff, and patients/caretakers to effectively process prior authorization requests for medications within the prescribed timelines.
    • Accurately prepares clinical documentation for prior authorizations (ex: progress notes, laboratory results, diagnosis codes, history of previously tried therapies, history of doctor visits).
    • Accurately prepares clinical information for pharmacists and clinic staff to process medication refill renewal requests.
    • Enrolls eligible patients into manufacturer patient assistance and co-pay programs.
    • Provides information to patients/caretakers on healthcare insurance coverage opportunities available.
    • Collects and records patient’s home medication history, allergies, immunizations and medical diagnosis.
    • Assists multi-disciplinary staff in quality improvement initiatives and participates in departmental and hospital committees.
    • Performs general duties of a pharmacy technician including but not limited to;
      • Prepares unit-dose nonhazardous and hazardous medications and drug supplies for dispensing as directed by a licensed pharmacist
      • Restocks and delivers medications to patient care areas or clinics, as assigned, including automated dispensing machines; assists in resolving discrepancies
      • Prepares non-parenteral nonhazardous and hazardous medications for dispensing including controlled substances; delivers medications

    SCOPE AND LEVEL

    Guidelines: Fully qualified, full performance or journey level. Guidelines are generally but not always clearly applicable, requiring the employee to exercise judgment in selecting the most pertinent guideline, interpret precedents, adapt standard practices to differing situations, and recommend alternative actions in situations without precedent.

    Complexity: Duties assigned are generally complex and may be of substantial intricacy. Work assignment is performed within an established framework under general instructions but requires simultaneous coordination of assigned functions or projects in various stages of completion.

    Decision Making: Exercises judgment and discretion, and is responsible for determining the time, place and sequence of the work performed.

    Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, defended, and gathered and discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.

    Supervision Received: Performs work with minimal supervisory oversight. Under general supervision, the employee receives assignments and is expected to carry them through to completion with substantial independence. Work is reviewed for adherence to instructions, accuracy, completeness, and conformance to standard practice or precedent. Recurring work clearly covered by guidelines may or may not be reviewed.

    Salary Information

    Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $48,962.61 to $73,443.91

    Hourly Salary Range: $23.54 to $35.31
