POSITION SUMMARY:

The Pharmacy Technician II assists Pharmacists in pharmaceutical preparation, distribution, and record-keeping functions related to the delivery of pharmaceutical supplies to patients of all ages, in accordance with department policies and procedures. Emphasis is placed on the ability to independently complete complicated intravenous medication preparations, subject to Pharmacist review.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must hold a CT Pharmacy Technician License or be eligible for licensing, and be Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Certified, or complete certification within 12 months of employment.
  • If enrolled in a university pharmacy program, must have a CT Pharmacy Intern Registration or complete registration within 12 months of employment.

EXPERIENCE:

  • IV Admixture experience is desirable but not required.
  • At least one year of previous Pharmacy Technician experience is required.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Computer skills and keyboard familiarity for work in the Meditech system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Job-Specific Competencies
  1. Interpret and enter IV medication orders into the computer accurately for pharmacist review.
  2. Prepare and organize paperwork needed for IV admixtures at scheduled times.
  3. Aseptically reconstitute medications to prepare IV admixtures, piggy-backs, syringes, and infusions for pharmacist review, including adding drugs and electrolytes for hyperalimentation.
  4. Prepare IV antineoplastic agents aseptically in a vertical laminar flow hood for pharmacist review.
  5. Post charges into the computer system from medication records and charge documents.
  6. Fill unit-dose cassettes and dispensing machine lists with medications, and restock medication areas as scheduled.
  7. Prepare patient-specific labeled medications, including eye meds, employee prescriptions, and kits.
  8. Respond politely to calls and requests for medication replacements and refills, communicating these to the pharmacist.
  9. Identify missing medications for cart fill and re-order from wholesalers using appropriate mechanisms.
  10. Repackage medications accurately with proper labeling and standards.
  11. Prepare and deliver narcotic orders, maintaining accurate counts and documentation.
  12. Perform nursing station inspections per policy.
  13. Use time effectively to complete tasks on schedule.
  14. Complete required ongoing training and education, including department-specific requirements.
  15. Maintain a clean and organized work area, mailbox, and pharmacy environment.
