Job summary

Loyola Medicine is seeking a Pharmacy Technician to support medication preparation, distribution, and patient record interactions in a dynamic hospital setting. The role emphasizes compliance with USP standards and safe handling of sterile and hazardous drugs.

You will contribute to policy development, staff training, and regulatory readiness while supporting leadership and participating in on-call duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Pharmacy Technician role requires a High School Diploma and professional pharmacy training.
  • Preferred credentials include a Pharmacist Technician program completion to enhance performance.
  • Licensure and certification requirements are specified for Illinois technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and distribute medications, manage drug inventory, and interact with patient records.
  • Ensure compliance with USP standards and oversee sterile and hazardous drug practices, including environmental monitoring and staff competency.
  • Coordinate cleanroom certifications, audits, documentation, and calibration programs; investigate deviations and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop and update policies and training materials; educate staff on regulatory requirements; collaborate with regulatory agencies; maintain survey readiness.
  • Assist pharmacy leadership in achieving department goals, provide support with system design and monitoring, and participate in on-call duties as needed.

What you’ll do:

This role performs all technician duties associated with the preparation and distribution of medications, drug inventory, and appropriate patient record interaction. Provides courteous, cooperative, and timely service to patients, visitors, and staff. Exemplifies the Trinity mission, vision, and values, and acts in accordance with Trinity and Pharmacy Department policies and procedures. Completes and maintains required annual technician competencies in a timely fashion. This position will assist the pharmacy leadership team in accomplishing department goals in coordination, distribution, customer service, troubleshooting, system design, implementation, and monitoring with support personnel in the department in working with pharmacy automation, as well as other duties and projects as requested. Staffing as needed based on department operations. Carries out on-call duties, as applicable.

  • serve as the subject matter expert for USP <795>, USP <797>, and USP <800> standards, ensuring compliant and safe compounding operations through oversight of sterile and hazardous drug practices, environmental monitoring, quality assurance activities, and staff competency assessments
  • coordinate cleanroom certifications, audit compounding processes and documentation, maintain required records, support equipment maintenance and calibration programs, investigate deviations and contamination events, and implement corrective actions to improve safety and compliance
  • develop and update policies and training materials, educate pharmacy staff on regulatory requirements and best practices, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and regulatory agencies, and maintain survey readiness.

Qualified candidates should possess advanced knowledge of USP standards, expertise in sterile compounding and hazardous drug management, strong understanding of cleanroom operations and contamination control, experience with audits and compliance reviews, data analysis and process improvement skills, and excellent communication, documentation, training, and collaboration abilities.

What you’ll need for this job:
Minimum Education:

Required: High School Diploma

Preferred:
  • Completion of a Pharmacy Technician Training Program
  • 6-10 years of previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Experience in a customer service pharmacy environment or related field
Minimum Experience:
Required:
  • Technicians must meet the definition for “good standing” as defined in the Career Ladder Resource Book for Pharmacy.
Preferred:
  • 2-3 years of continuous employment with the Pharmacy
Licensure/Certifications:
Required:
  • Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician License (IDFPR).
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification validated by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or ExCPT validated by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) required for all technicians licensed after December 31st, 2007. Newly licensed technicians have 2 years from license effective date to obtain their CPhT and become licensed as a registered certified pharmacy technician.
Preferred:
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification validated by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Pay Range: $21.02 - 32.59 per HourActual compensation will fall within the range but may vary based on factors such as experience, qualifications, education, location, licensure, certification requirements, and comparisons to colleagues in similar roles.
