Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a hands-on Personnel Security Specialist to own day-to-day personnel security operations enabling classified government work. You will manage clearance and access requests, verify eligibility, and maintain records across DISS, NBIS/eApp, and other systems, while guiding employees through security requirements with discretion.

Based in San Francisco, CA or Washington, DC, the role uses a hybrid model with three in-office days per week and relocation support.

Qualifications

• Hands-on personnel security experience supporting a cleared defense contractor or federal customer.
• Experience with clearance verification, access processing, indoctrinations, debriefings, and onboarding/offboarding.
• Experience with DISS and NBIS/eApp; familiarity with NISS, SWFT, Scattered Castles.
• Understand the NISPOM and government security requirements.
• Highly organized with ability to manage high-volume case queues.
• Demonstrate discretion with personal information and escalation when needed.

Responsibilities

• Own the daily personnel security workload from intake through completion, including clearance verification and access nominations.
• Process and track personnel eligibility, classified access, indoctrinations, debriefings, and approvals.
• Maintain audit-ready records in DISS, NBIS/eApp, NISS, and other platforms.
• Guide employees through security forms and required briefings while protecting sensitive information.
• Coordinate actions with government security reps, customer offices, and internal partners.
• Prepare visit authorization requests and related access packages.
• Identify discrepancies and escalate sensitive issues promptly.
• Maintain visibility into case ownership, status, deadlines, and dependencies.
• Develop checklists, SOPs, templates, and workflows to reduce backlog.
• Support self-inspections and audits to scale the program.
