Job summary

Washtenaw County Road Commission seeks a detail-oriented Permits Associate to manage permit applications and related paperwork. You will greet the public at the permits counter, respond to inquiries, and support the permit tracking system and fee collections.

The role requires 1–2 years of administrative experience, preferably in permitting, with a high school diploma or GED and an associate degree preferred. This is an on-site position in Ann Arbor, MI with a comprehensive benefits package.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and processes permit applications and related documents.
  • Greets visitors at the permits counter, answers phone calls, and provides information on permits and activities.
  • Supports the Communications Associate by handling calls, visitors, and service requests entry.
  • Checks permit info for compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Routes plans to the department for review and issuance of permits.
  • Calculates and collects permit fees; prepares bank deposits.
  • Maintains the permit tracking system and related records.
  • Coordinates the Adopt-A-Road program.
  • Assists in creating/revising forms and office procedures.
  • Maintains office files and control records.

Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Permits Associate. An employee in this position performs a variety of clerical activities related to right-of-way and transportation permits and other engineering-related activities on roadways under the jurisdiction of the Washtenaw County Road Commission.

Schedule
  • Winter schedule: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with potential for overtime.
Essential Duties And Functions

  • Reviews and processes permit applications and associated documents to ensure all relevant plans, forms and information accompany the application.
  • Greets visitors at the permits counter, answers phone calls and provides the public with information related to permits and road commission activities.
  • Provides support to the Communications Associate in answering phone calls, greeting visitors and entering service requests into a computerized service request tracking system.
  • Checks permit application information for compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Routes plans and associated information to department for plan review processing and permit issuance.
  • Calculates, collects, records appropriate fees, and accounts for permit fee monies; prepares bank deposits.
  • Collects securities via a letter of credit, cash or utility bond for developers and utility companies to either work or hire a contractor to work in the right-of-way.
  • Maintains a computerized permit tracking system and variety of records on permit applications; enters appropriate information into logs and maintains logs and records of permits issued; maintains and compiles records files, forms and reports concerning permit inspection and plan review activities.
  • Coordinates the Adopt-A-Road program.
  • Assists in creating and revising forms, proposes procedures, formats, and standards for office correspondence.
  • Establishes and maintains office files, logs, indexes, control records, or other information concerning the work within the organization.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED; an associate degree in business or public administration is preferred
  • One to two years of relevant administrative experience, preferably in permitting or a similar office environment.

Salary: $21.77 - $32.18 per hour
