Job summary

The City of Newberry is seeking an enthusiastic Permit Technician I to join our Building Department. This frontline role guides residents and contractors through the permitting process, providing responsive service and accurate data entry to ensure compliance.

Responsibilities include reviewing applications, coordinating plan reviews, calculating fees, maintaining records, and supporting online permitting systems. A strong customer focus and familiarity with MS Office are essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years of administrative/data entry experience.
  • Minimum one year of cash handling experience.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Florida Notary Public commission or able to obtain.
  • ICC Permit Technician certification or able to obtain within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary contact for residents, contractors, and customers during permitting.
  • Receive, review, and process permit applications and plans for completeness.
  • Coordinate permit reviews, monitor status, and verify approvals before issuance.
  • Calculate and process permit fees and payments, balance daily transactions.
  • Maintain contractor registrations and verify licenses/insurance.
  • Schedule inspections with Building Department staff and inspectors.
  • Assist with business tax applications, lien searches, and records management.
  • Maintain electronic and physical records; support online permitting systems.

The City of Newberry is seeking an enthusiastic Permit Technician I to join our Building Department. As a key point of contact for residents, contractors, and City staff, this position helps guide customers through the permitting process while providing the responsive, helpful service our community expects.

Qualifications
Required
  • Ability to work the required Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. schedule
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing administrative, data entry, and clerical work
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experiencewith cash handling and card processing.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Moderate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, or similar software applications
  • Current State of Florida Notary Public commission or ability to obtain
  • Current International Code Council (ICC) Permit Technician certification or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment
Preferred
  • Experience with or knowledge of construction trades and/or permitting processes.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for residents, contractors, and other customers, providing guidance and assistance throughout the permitting process.
  • Receive, review, and process building permit applications, plans, and supporting documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Coordinate permit and plan reviews, monitor application status and revisions, and verify required approvals before permit issuance.
  • Calculate and process permit fees, deposits, and payments, including balancing daily transactions.
  • Maintain contractor registrations and verify required licenses, insurance, and supporting documentation.
  • Schedule inspections and coordinate with inspectors, the Building Official, other City departments, and service providers.
  • Process business tax applications and renewals and assist with lien searches, utility releases, records, correspondence, and other Building Department administrative functions.
  • Maintain accurate electronic and physical records and provide support for the department’s website, online permitting systems, and other departmental needs.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based and requires extended periods of computer use and interaction with the public.

  • Primarily sedentary work with periods of sitting, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Ability to move throughout an office environment and operate standard office equipment.
  • Frequent computer and keyboard use requiring repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds.
  • Work is performed primarily indoors in an office environment with varying noise levels.
  • May occasionally be required to operate a motor vehicle.
