Job summary

City of Newberry seeks an Electric Line Worker I to join our electric utility team. This journey‑level position suits an experienced line worker who values teamwork and safe, quality work to keep the community powered.

The role involves constructing, maintaining, and repairing distribution systems, energized line work, URD tasks, and on‑call responses with a strong safety focus and support from a dedicated team.

Qualifications

  • Florida Class B CDL or higher with a clean driving record.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a recognized line worker apprenticeship program.
  • Minimum five years of experience with energized overhead/underground distribution.
  • Experience climbing wood poles and high‑voltage line work.

Responsibilities

  • Construct, maintain, and repair overhead and underground distribution systems.
  • Perform energized line work, URD installation and repair, cable splicing and termination, and switching operations.
  • Troubleshoot outages and safely restore service.
  • Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, trenchers, and line‑locating equipment.
  • Follow safety practices and use PPE; identify hazards and plan work accordingly.
  • Participate in rotational on‑call duty and respond to outages and emergencies.

The City of Newberry is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Electric Line Worker I to join our electric utility team. Newberry has been a public power community for more than a century, with the City’s electric utility serving residents and businesses since 1910. Today, our Electric Department provides reliable service to more than 3,000 homes and businesses while maintaining nearly 28 miles of primary overhead distribution and 13 miles of primary underground service. As a community-owned utility, our electric team works close to home and plays a direct role in maintaining and improving the system, restoring outages, responding to emergencies, and keeping Newberry powered.

Qualifications
Required
  • Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or higher, for both manual and automatic transmission, with an acceptable driving record
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a recognized line worker apprenticeship program
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience working with energized overhead and underground electrical distribution systems
  • Experience climbing wood poles and performing high‑voltage line work
Preferred
  • Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Intermediate Certification, or ability to obtain.
  • Experience with switching operations, troubleshooting, and outage restoration on electric distribution systems.
  • Experience with underground residential distribution (URD) installation and repair.
  • OSHA Competent Person in Charge of Excavation certification, or ability to obtain.
  • OSHA Confined Space Entrant/Attendant certification, or ability to obtain.

  • Successful completion of required written and practical examinations
Key Responsibilities
  • Construct, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electrical distribution systems, including poles, conductors, transformers, regulators, capacitor banks, and protective devices.
  • Perform energized line work, underground residential distribution (URD) installation and repair, cable splicing and termination, and switching operations.
  • Troubleshoot outages, service interruptions, and electrical system issues to safely and efficiently restore service.
  • Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, trenchers, line‑locating equipment, and other specialized tools and equipment used in electric system operations.
  • Follow and promote established safety practices, properly use required PPE, identify hazards, and plan work to protect employees, the public, and property.
  • Participate in rotational on‑call duty and respond to outages, severe weather, and other emergencies, including nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position performs physically demanding work primarily outdoors and requires the ability to safely work around energized electrical systems, at heights, and in varying weather and environmental conditions.

  • Ability to climb poles, work at heights, and work in confined or elevated spaces.
  • Ability to lift and carry 45+ pounds and perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
