Per Diem Public Safety Officer

Department: Public Safety

Campus: Queens, NY • ID: 219395-951 • Temporary

Job Summary:

Public Safety Officers foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors across all St. John’s University campuses and branch properties. They report directly to Supervisors and do not manage a staff.

Essential Functions:

• Respond to all calls for assistance including crimes in progress, past crimes, vehicle accidents, personnel injuries, medical cases, fires, and alarms.
• Render first aid, CPR, and utilize Automated External Defibrillator.
• Operate a patrol vehicle safely in areas of high pedestrian traffic.
• Conduct field investigations concerning violations of law and University policy, gather information, and prepare reports.
• Engage with campus community departments regarding security concerns.
• Patrol assigned posts or areas on foot, bicycle, scooter, or in a motor patrol vehicle.
• Participate in crime prevention and community policing activities.
• Monitor current crime trends on and around campus and take appropriate action.
• Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic and enforce campus parking regulations.
• Perform general security services including locking and unlocking buildings.
• Assist students requiring escorts due to injury or accessibility issues.
• Assist motorists with battery, tire, or lock problems.
• Perform campus access control in security kiosks by documenting vehicle license plates and issuing parking permits.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Competencies:

Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be customer service oriented, and willing to assist people in need. Certification in CPR or First Aid is required.

Work Environment:

Officers respond to routine and emergency calls for service in and around the University, operating in both professional office and outdoor environments.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to patrol on foot, bicycle, scooter, or in a motor patrol vehicle.
• Ability to climb multiple flights of stairs.
• Ability to stand or sit for 4-8 hours.
• Ability to lift or move up to 30-50 pounds.
• Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

Environmental Conditions:

Must work during emergencies and be able to perform duties outdoors during inclement weather.

Travel:

Officers may be required to work at any of the branch campuses within the US.

Required Education and Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years security experience preferred.
• New York State Fire Guard License to be obtained within six months of employment.
• High School diploma or equivalent; college degrees preferred.
• Current New York State Security guard license and clean motor vehicle operator’s license required.
• Must be able to perform responsibilities while wearing an N-95 respirator mask as mandated by OSHA regulations.
• Must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
• Must be able to work on all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

• Must possess and maintain a City of New York Fire Department Certificate of Fitness within ninety (90) days of employment.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary for this position is $26.00/hr. St. John’s University considers various factors when extending an offer.

This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
