Per‑Diem Public Safety Officer

Job Summary
Public Safety Officers foster and maintain a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors across all St. John’s University campuses and branch properties. Officers report directly to Supervisors and do not manage staff.
Essential Functions
- Respond to all calls for assistance, including crimes in progress, past crimes, vehicle accidents, personnel injuries, medical and aided cases, fires, smoke, burglar and duress alarms.
- Render first aid, CPR, and utilize an Automated External Defibrillator.
- Operate a patrol vehicle safely and proficiently in high pedestrian traffic areas.
- Conduct field investigations concerning violations of law, University policy, and student code of conduct; gather information and prepare reports.
- Engage with campus community departments to assess security needs or concerns.
- Patrol assigned posts or areas on foot, bicycle, scooter, or in a motor patrol vehicle.
- Participate actively in crime prevention and community policing activities.
- Monitor current crime trends on and around campus and take appropriate action to deter activity.
- Direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic and enforce campus parking regulations.
- Perform general security services such as locking/unlocking buildings, rooms, laboratories, and roadway gates.
- Assist students requiring escorts due to injury or accessibility issues.
- Assist motorists with battery, tire, or door lock problems.
- Perform campus access control at security kiosks by documenting vehicle license plates and issuing parking permits.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Competencies
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Customer service oriented with a willingness to assist people in need.
- Certified in administering CPR or First Aid and proficient with an Automated External Defibrillator.
Work Environment
Respond to routine and emergency calls in and around the University, many of which are unique to a campus environment. The position operates in a professional office environment and outdoors as required, using standard office equipment.
Physical Demands
- Patrol on foot, bicycle, scooter, or motor patrol vehicle.
- Climb multiple flights of stairs for vertical checks.
- Stand or sit for 4–8 hours.
- Occasionally lift or move 30–50 pounds.
- Communicate clearly in writing and verbally.
- Operate departmental equipment.
Environmental Conditions
- Work during emergencies such as fire, smoke, gas leaks, construction within campus.
- Perform duties outdoors during inclement weather.
- Work during emergencies including pandemics and active shooter situations.
Travel
May be asked to work at any branch campus within the US only.
Required Education And Experience
- Prefer a minimum of 5 years security experience.
- New York State Fire Guard License within six months of employment; renewal every two years, with copies provided to the Executive Director.
- High School diploma or equivalent; college or university degrees preferred.
- Current New York State Security Guard license and a current, clean motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Ability to wear an N‑95 respirator mask as mandated by OSHA regulations.
- Pass a comprehensive background investigation.
- Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred Education And Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent; college or university degrees preferred.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- Hold a current New York State Security Guard license and a clean motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Hold a City of New York Fire Department Certificate of Fitness, Citywide Fireguard for Impairment (F‑01); obtain within 90 days if not held at hire.
Other Duties
- Work operational and special event overtime assignments as required.
- Shift hours to meet department minimum requirements as needed.
- Stay past assigned hours during emergency situations such as snow storms.
Pay Transparency
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary for this position is $25.00/hr. St. John’s University considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, and market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
Relocation
This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.
