Job summary

NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island in Mineola seeks a Senior Lab Assistant - Per Diem to support day-to-day laboratory operations, specimen management and inventory control. The role involves processing samples, accessioning, and assisting lab staff to ensure timely tests and accurate results.

You will handle front-end and back-end specimen handling, dispose of regulated waste per policy, and communicate with providers.

Qualifications

• High School diploma with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry.
• Laboratory experience including handling open containers of blood and body fluid.
• Knowledge of computer applications especially Excel and Word.
• Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Screen and accession specimens in the LIS as described in the Lab Assistant Job Description.
• Maintain an adequate supply of all general laboratory items and department reagents; communicate needs to supervisor.
• Ensure proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials; document deliveries per NYU policy.
• Understand specimen requirements and communicate with providers; document cancellations or rejections.
• Assure specimen quality prior to processing.
• Call providers to confirm requests and place orders as required.
• Process front-end samples: labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, and loading onto analyzers.
• Process back-end samples for storage, tracking and disposal per policy.
• Properly dispose of all department regulated waste.
• Clean lab surfaces and equipment per protocols; document as required.
• Maintain logs for temperature and humidity for equipment and work areas.
• Answer the phone and assist callers with test availability and timelines.
• Access automated test platforms to assess status of samples.
• Assist in blood product modification (irradiation, thawing).
• Inventory management of blood products (receiving, stocking, expiration).
• Perform phlebotomy for inpatients.
