Job summary

WellTheory is seeking a People Ops Generalist to own payroll, multi-state compliance, benefits, leaves, and HR policies. You’ll partner with Finance, Recruiting, IT, and managers across the company, reporting to the Head of People. This fully remote role supports 20+ states in a fast-growing team.

You’ll manage onboarding/offboarding, policy updates, and employee questions with discretion. You’ll also explore AI automation to streamline repeatable tasks.

Qualifications

• 4-7+ years of experience in People Operations or HR, ideally at a fast-growing startup, including hands‑on ownership of payroll
• Hands-on payroll ownership across multiple states and compliance
• Strong working knowledge of federal and state employment law, including leaves, ADA accommodations, and wage/hour rules
• Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to payroll accuracy
• Discretion, empathy, and ability to handle sensitive situations confidentially
• Interest in automating repeatable tasks with AI tools like Claude
• Thrives in a fully remote, fast-paced environment with high time-sensitivity

Responsibilities

• Run multi-state payroll bi-weekly in Gusto and Deel and keep HRIS up to date
• Own payroll tax setup for new states, workers' comp, and unemployment insurance
• Be the go-to partner for employees on People-related questions and relations issues
• Support benefits, leaves, accommodations, and time-off processing
• Keep HR policies current with growth and changing federal/state law
• Own onboarding and offboarding processes for a smooth employee experience
• Automate repeatable People Ops tasks with AI while applying HR judgment
