Job summary

University of New Mexico in Albuquerque is seeking Peer Mentors to support first-year students as they transition to UNM coursework for Fall 2026. You will work with COEHS departments across several majors to guide students through academic and campus resources.

Mentors commit 5–10 hours per week, participate in training, assist with Student Success workshops, and help students register for Spring 2027 courses, serving as ambassadors for COEHS.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a COEHS undergraduate program.
• Commitment to supporting first-year students.
• Ability to work in-person on main campus.

Responsibilities

• Contribute a minimum of five hours and a maximum of ten hours per week toward the peer mentorship initiative.
• Provide academic guidance and support to first year mentees through active listening, navigating challenges, providing resources, and supporting skill development.
• Attend Peer Mentorship training sessions with COEHS staff.
• Attend and assist the facilitation of Student Success workshop(s) hosted by the PASS office.
• Attend meetings with program faculty to review important learning opportunities for pre-major students.
• Meet with mentees throughout Fall semester with focus on Spring 2027 course registration.
• Serve as ambassador of COEHS and their department in COEHS.
• Submit evaluations and feedback to COEHS staff and peer mentorship council.

Position Summary

In collaboration with the College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) departments for undergraduate coursework, the Pathways for Academic Support and Success (PASS) is hiring Peer Mentors to support the first year population in their transition to UNM coursework during the Fall 2026 semester.

A total of 6 mentors will be hired across the College of Education and Human Sciences major departments:

• Department of Special Education
• Department of Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences
• Department of Individual, Family, and Community Education
• Department of Teacher Education, Educational Leadership and Policy

We are seeking applicants who are passionate about becoming a mentor to first-year students in your field of study to support and guide them through their academic and UNM journey. This individual should seek to improve the experience of first-year students at COEHS and UNM.

Below are the role and responsibilities of the mentors -

• Contribute a minimum of five hours and a maximum of ten hours per week toward the peer mentorship initiative
• Provide academic guidance and support to first year peer mentees through active listening, navigating challenges, providing resources, and supporting all efforts towards skill development (writing, research, study skills, etc...)
• Attend Peer Mentorship training sessions with COEHS staff
• Attend and assist the facilitation of Student Success workshop(s) hosted by the PASS office
• Attend meetings with program faculty to review important learning opportunities for pre-major students
• Meet with mentees throughout Fall semester with special focus on support during registration for Spring 2027 courses
• Serve as ambassador of COEHS and their respective department in COEHS
• Submit evaluations and feedback to the COEHS staff and peer mentorship council

Preferred Qualifications

• Program-admitted to a COEHS undergraduate major
• Ability to attend meetings, workshops, and events in-person on main campus
• Experience with providing support to peers
