Job summary

UCSF Health is seeking a Staff Speech-Language Pathologist (Speech Pathologist 2) to provide comprehensive pediatric speech therapy across infants to adolescents. You will conduct evaluations, set goals, develop intervention plans, and supervise staff while contributing to quality improvement and education.

Requirements include a Master’s with fellowship (or long-agoBachelor’s), 1+ year of patient care, and strong English communication.

Qualifications

• Masters degree with clinical fellowship (or bachelor’s degree if graduated 15+ years ago).
• Minimum one year of patient-care experience.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Ability to recognize signs of patient distress.
• Basic computer skills, including Epic electronic medical record use.
• Strong interpersonal, time-management, problem-solving, and self-initiation skills.
• Flexibility to work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
• Pediatric outpatient speech and language assessment and treatment clinical experience.
• Preferred: at least one year of licensed experience with pediatric populations.
• Prior experience in an academic medical center environment.
• Prior participation in an interdisciplinary health provider team.
• Current pediatric FEES and/or MBSS competence.

Responsibilities

• Perform speech-language pathology evaluations and administer relevant tests (neurological, dysphagia, cognitive-linguistic, voice, and speech).
• Establish short- and long-term therapeutic goals based on results and in consultation with providers and families.
• Develop and adjust therapeutic plans and intervention programs.
• Provide direct patient care using the full range of speech-language techniques within scope of practice and participant competence.
• Delegate and supervise therapeutic tasks to support staff when appropriate.
• Complete discharge planning and maintain accurate patient records (progress notes, discharge notes, charges, and third‑party payer reports).
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, managers, and clinical personnel; report patient progress at rounds, clinics, and team conferences.
• Demonstrate effective time‑management and organization skills.
• Participate in staff education, orientation, community outreach, and clinical precepting of interns and fellows; contribute to departmental quality assurance, performance improvement, and special projects.

The Staff Speech-Language Pathologist (Speech Pathologist 2) works with pediatric patients across the age

continuum – infants, children, adolescents – and from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds

providing both direct and indirect patient care services. Under general direction and upon receipt of written

referrals, the Staff Speech-Language Pathologist plans and administers a full range of speech therapy

services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments. Services include patient

evaluations using speech-language pathology tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic

intervention goals and development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic

intervention plans utilizing all aspects of the speech-language pathology scope of practice.

The Staff Speech-Language Pathologist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of

patient care services. While performing job duties, the Staff Speech-Language Pathologist may also

supervise support personnel including Rehabilitation Aides as well as Speech-Language Pathology students

and clinical fellows. The Staff Speech-Language Pathologist actively participates in departmental and

organizational programs, including quality and performance improvement activities, clinical education

programs, and inservices and staff development activities.

• Performs speech-language pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed

established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic interventions based

on the patient’s progress and performance

Administers direct patient care utilizing the full range of occupational therapy

techniques and methods within scope of practice and level of competence,

appropriate to the patient’s goals and plan of care.

• Delegates and supervises any part of the patient’s therapeutic intervention which
  
  

can be legally and appropriately done by support staff.

• Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate.
• Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records as required by
  
  

policy and payer requirements, including services rendered, progress notes,

discharge notes, charges for services provided, and third-party payer reports (eg

CCS, Medi-Cal)

• Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families,

Educational Responsibilities

• Participates in staff inservice education programs, staff and team meetings.

and clinical fellows, and in departmental education activities related to students in

other health care professions (eg. Nursing, Medicine, Occupational Therapy).

• Pediatric OP Speech and Language Assessment and Treatment clinical experience.
• PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
• Minimum one year of licensed experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist working with pediatric populations.
• Prior speech pathology experience in an academic medical center environment.
• Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

• Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California.
• Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.
• Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Assessment and Treatment, skills to perform pediatric Modified Barium Swallow Studies.
