Job description

The Staff Speech Language Pathologist, the Speech Pathologist II, reports to the Clinical Supervisor, Speech Language Pathology and provides both direct and indirect patient care services. The Staff Speech Language Pathologist II works primarily with adult and geriatric patients from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, although pediatric and adolescent patients may also be treated. Under general direction and upon receipt of written referrals, the Staff Speech Language Pathologist II plans and administers a full range of speech therapy services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments and disabilities. Services include patient evaluations using speech language pathology tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic intervention goals and development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic intervention plans utilizing all aspects of the speech language pathology scope of practice. The Staff Speech Pathologist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of patient care services. While performing job duties, the Staff Speech Language Pathologist II may also supervise support personnel, Rehabilitation Aides as well as student interns and Speech Language Pathology Clinical Fellows. The Staff Speech Language Pathologist II actively participates in departmental and organizational programs, including performance improvement activities, clinical education programs, and in services and staff development activities.

Patient Care Responsibilities

• Performs Speech Language Pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed physician or dentist and administers various neurological, dysphagia, cognitive-linguistic, voice and speech-language tests to determine a patient’s functional limitations.
• Establishes short and long term therapeutic intervention goals based on the results of the evaluation and in consultation with the referring practitioner.
• Develops a therapeutic intervention plan based on results of the evaluation and established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic intervention programs according to the patient’s progress and performance.
• Administers direct patient care, utilizing the full range of Speech Language Pathology techniques as outlined in the Series Concept.
• Delegates and supervises any part of a patient’s therapeutic intervention which can be legally and appropriately done by support staff.
• Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate.
• Prepares, maintains and transmits accurate patient care records as required including services rendered, progress notes, discharge notes and third party payer reports (e.g. CCS, MediCare, Medi-Cal forms).
• Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, families, department staff, managers and other hospital personnel.
• Reports on patients' progress at various rounds, clinics and conferences as indicated.
• Demonstrates effective time management skills.

Educational Responsibilities

• Participates in staff inservice education program, staff, and area meetings.
• Participates in orientation and training of new staff.
• Participates in and provides programs to the community and other hospital departments.
• Participates in clinical instruction of affiliating speech language pathology interns, Clinical Fellowship Year speech language pathologists, and in departmental educational activities related to other health care students (e.g. nursing, medical and pre-speech language pathology).
• Seeks appropriate opportunities for ongoing education and professional development.

Departmental Responsibilities

• Participates in department quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
• Contributes to the goals of the department by participating in special projects, committees, etc.
• Represents the department as a professional.

Other Functions and Responsibilities

• Performs any other duties related to patient care activities as required.
• Performs any other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director and/or the Director of Rehabilitative Services.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 12 months experience as a licensed therapist.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to recognize signs of distress.
• Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.
• Basic computer skills in word processing and online communication.
• Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
• This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior speech language pathology experience in an academic medical center environment.
• Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.
• Possession of a degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited professional educational program.

Required Licenses/Certification

• Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech‑Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California.
