Job summary

Children's Place Association is seeking a Nurse Consultant to provide professional nursing consultation and support for Early Head Start and Head Start programs in Chicago. You will promote health and safety for enrolled children, ensure health requirements compliance, and support children with identified health needs.

The role involves collaboration with program staff and families; implementation of health plans; supervision of health screenings; and training staff in health-related topics.

Qualifications

• Current Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Minimum of two years of nursing experience; pediatric/public health/school health/early childhood preferred.
• Knowledge of child health, immunizations, medication administration, and health and safety practices.
• Ability to work collaboratively with children, families, staff, healthcare providers, and community agencies.
• Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic recordkeeping systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide or coordinate medication administration training for program staff.
• Monitor medication administration practices, storage, handling procedures, and records during site visits.
• Develop, implement, and maintain IHPs for children with health concerns.
• Communicate IHPs to staff and families; identify and address training needs.
• Maintain tracking systems for IHPs and follow-up health activities.
• Conduct and support health screenings and assessments (height/weight, BP, hearing/vision, lead risk, TB risk).
• Monitor ongoing medical and dental follow-up for enrolled children.
• Collaborate with Health Services staff and Family Support Specialists to obtain recommended health and dental services.
• Review physical exams and health documentation for compliance with age requirements and recommendations.
• Review health histories and recommend follow-up actions for new enrollments.
• Assist staff in accommodations for children with chronic health conditions and special needs.
• Provide or coordinate health-related training for staff.
• Review immunization records for compliance and verify with state systems.
• Assist staff and families with immunization concerns and follow-up.
• Review dental records and ensure follow-up treatment as needed.
• Establish relationships with healthcare providers, clinics, and community partners.
• Participate in Health Services Advisory Committee and other health meetings.
• Provide health education, training, consultations, and resources to staff and families.
• Support health information communication to families; address health needs of children.
• Ensure compliance with Head Start/EO Head Start and Illinois DCFS health and nursing consultation requirements.
• Conduct classroom monitoring of health and safety practices (handwashing, diapering, sanitation, infection control).
• Support quality assurance initiatives to improve service quality and compliance with licensing and standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned by program leadership.
